Bob Ley is made to anchor US soccer coverage. There's just something about him that makes it special.

He'll probably get canned after the 2014 world cup since ESPN lost the rights for 2018. Hopefully he goes to Fox to cover it.

I don't really give a shite about Howie Schwab and since the arrival of the NFL and MLB networks I have no conception of why anyone at any point would watch ESPN programming beyond actual game broadcasts

Yup. You watch ESPN when you're forced to. This is the network that thought America needed to see Colin Cowherd, Jemele Hill, Skip Bayless, and Stephen A. Smith.

If you're watching non-event shows on ESPN you have failed at life.

Makes sense given that they are fully in the entertainment business, and not the sports journalism business.

Exactly.

The only thing that mattered was my salary, which in my view was the lone reason I lost my job.

Welcome to capitalism. Technology has made it where Schwab's job can be done almost as well by a 25 year old kid. Just because you were worth a million a year 15 years ago does not mean you are worth that today. I'm sure ESPN offered him a reduced salary and he probably said FU. Basically the same situation as a guy like Mark Sanchez making way more than he is worth and refusing to take a pay cut. Eventually he will be cut.

A 50 billion dollar company doesn't need to dump one person over 10 thousand dollars, especially one who worked there for a quarter century. And is it Howie Schwab's fault ESPN overpaid him?

If you justify those decisions, you're just a dick. There are more things to life than a fricking profit margin. Disney is not going bankrupt.

Disney would go bankrupt if you ran the HR department. If you have one vastly overpaid employee relative to value, eventually all your employees will be vastly overpaid. When you hire a new employee or negotiate a new contract with an existing employee, the baseline starting point of the salary negotiation is what other people in similar positions are making at the company. If Schwab, for example, is making let's just say a million bucks leading the stat department, then you are likely going to have to pay anyone with a similar job title that much or more.

I think he could be a GREAT 3rd guy in a booth, just giving the craziest stats he can think of.

Like A-rod bats .248 when there is a guy on 3rd base who is of hispanic descent, but only on Tuesdays-Thursdays

I think this is where his real value is. ESPN misused him by taking him off camera. Anyone can find some stats with 15 minutes of time and a computer, but no one can spout of stats, live, on the air and on the spot when you need them like Schwab. He does not have the personality to lead his own show, but he would be great as the nerdy team member on a 3 or 4 man crew.
