Well its not something that most people would question after they got wrapped up in the story, and the movie was already pretty long, so i could see why they didnt put it in the film
They had a throwaway line saying "they had explorer ship going to many stars/planets" back in the day i believe and they obvious knew a lot about earth from the beginning of the movie, so its not a huge plot hole or anything
And the comic is on the internet for free. It may have been linked in this thread, but im not sure, google will likey net you some good results
