NSA revelations only 'the tip of the iceberg,' says Dem lawmaker

quote:

The federal surveillance programs revealed in media reports are just “the tip of the iceberg,” a House Democrat said Wednesday.

Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) said lawmakers learned “significantly more” about the spy programs at the National Security Agency (NSA) during a briefing on Tuesday with counterterrorism officials.

“What we learned in there,” Sanchez said, “is significantly more than what is out in the media today.”

Lawmakers are barred from revealing the classified information they receive in intelligence briefings, and Sanchez was careful not to specify what members might have learned about the NSA’s work.

“I can’t speak to what we learned in there, and I don’t know if there are other leaks, if there’s more information somewhere, if somebody else is going to step up, but I will tell you that I believe it’s the tip of the iceberg,” she said.

I love it when breaking news doesn't really tell you anything.

Really? A democratic leader, who presumedly has a vested interest in the imagine of her party and the democrat leading this country, is saying that the span of this program far exceeds the already excessive surveillance that we now know the NSA is conducting. And you still think this tells us absolutely nothing? Not even a shred of reason to be concerned?

Sure, this gives us no details. But it sure as shite says a lot.

Nothing you probably don't already know, but interesting nonetheless.

Interview with William Binney, a thirty-two year veteran of the NSA who helped design a top-secret program that he says broadly changed Americans’ personal data. And he actually helped crack those codes, and enter into this.

"We’re talking trillions, yea. My estimate with phone calls and emails jointly would be on the order of 20 trillion for the last 12 years."

"NSA had deployed Naris devices in its court documents submitted by Mark Klein, documenting the NSA room in the San Francisco At&T building where they had Naris devices in a splitter that basically duplicated the fiber-optic lines and would send them down two paths. All the information went down two directions: one of them went down the Naris devices in the NSA room."

"they’ve got recorded – then they extend it and have digital data. That means all kinds of email, all kinds of Twitter kind-of things, anything going across the fiber-optic lines, as well as the public switch telephone network."

"My personal view is that the intelligence community is bamboozling Congress and the administration. They are telling them that they have to do this in order to find the bad guys in the networks, and that’s just absolutely false. You don’t have to do that. There are ways and means to do that, and I left that ability and capability with them, and they just threw it away. So instead they just opted to collect everything they could about everybody in this country, and one of the reasons that they would want to do that – the only one I could think of is they wanted to be able to leverage anybody in this country. For example, we can take the case of the IRS and the tea party, and the harassing they’re doing there. One of the people that’s being harassed was giving testimony in front of Congress. And they said, which I thought was quite revealing, was that they had a question from the IRS that asked, “what Is your relationship with this other person?” And they gave the name. Well how would they know that unless they knew the communications community of that person? So that means you’re getting back to this program where they’re pulling all the records of phone calls and emails and everything together and seeing who that person worked with. And on top of that it gave them the ability to pull together the entire tea party. So you would know everybody that’s involved in the tea party, peripherally or centrally."

"There are two parts: one is the public switch, the PSTN – public switch telephone network, and the other is the Internet, or the World Wide Web...So there’s no question that we shouldn’t have fairly 99.9999 percent accuracy "

I wonder (honestly) if they monitor message boards such as this and trace the handles to your email, which in turn reveals who you are? It seems like it would be really easy to do. It also seems if an administration were so inclined (not saying Obama is), they could essentially ruin people with audits and the like because of their voiced opinions on a damn message board.

Every single character you type is monitored by a government agent. The government agent is a computer but that doesn't make it any better.

Don't really need the handle to email connection, just the posting IP.

Exactly what I was thinking at the time. How does the IRS know that you are in contact with a specific individual? ....enough to inquire the nature of your relationship with them? Where did they get that info?

Not even sure they'd need that. They could probably figure out who most of us were just by reading our posting history. Wouldn't really require any cloak and dagger or high tech stuff...just a little time and effort by an actual person.
