I am very interested in planting some pear trees out at our camp. I spoke with an older forester for about an hour yesterday about it. He gave me loads of information on types to plant and to how to take care of them for the first couple of years. He told me "you can plant apples or crab apples but I've got many of good bucks on my wall that died with a pear in his mouth"

Does anyone on here plant fruit trees or bushes/shrubs? I'm curious what others on here have planted? Our camp is in NWLA.

I don't brush hog or spray black berry vines/thickets anymore. They like the berries as well as the leaves per a LA Sportsman article from a year or two ago.

I have planted pears and they did well.

I used half a bag of this for each tree. they survived the last three drought summers in Texas.

i have tons of funny pictures of deer with pears in their mouth, they love em. Our tree puts on 200-300 pears easy each year. perfect bow season bait for free

go to a local nursery.. from my experience the deer love the pear, crab apple, and persimmon.
IMO pear is easiest to grow, grows the fastest, and biggesy fruit.

the deer like persimmon the best, but personally i could have several pear trees producing more fruit faster so that would be my route

Consider planting different kinds of trees in the same area, try to look at when they fruit so that it's spaced throughout the year if you can.

I remember crab apples as a summer fruit, pears are in the fall I think, persimmons are later I think too.

Idea is to create a sustainable supply in an area.

Great Minds....
That is exactly what I am trying to do. The guy I spoke with said if you do it right you shouldn't have to mess with food plots after the trees mature and start dropping fruit. I've never been this excited about fruit

You can probably still go disc and plant rye grass underneath once they mature if you want something to do.

Our pears never make it to deer season. I have four of them planted, two are 40+ years old. They bear a ton of fruit. Every animal in the woods hits them as they ripe. Pears may be a good off season supplement but they are woodland fertilizer long before deer season starts.

You are better off growing a briar thicket.

I was told some pear trees take 9 yrs to make fruit.

I'd check the variety before planting.

We have native persimmons and have 4 peach trees that were planted just before we got the property. (North Bama)

All of them have quit producing fruit by time deer season comes in. First part of Bow season ( Mid Oct.) will still have persimmons on the ground but thats about as late as they come.

My dad and I planted two pear trees when I was a kid. They make alot of big pears now and I have quite a few pics with deer chomping on them. Pears never have lasted until hunting season though.
I plant my food plit around the trees.

FWIW.. they are pretty damn good to eat.

honey suckle is another good browse to plant. the japanese variety will grow faster than the deer can eat it. the native coral sometimes has a hard time keeping up depending on the deer population.
