Taking a break from ARs because I need a new rifle that I can use for deer season and for F-Class (long range) competitions. This is my current plan.

Going to buy a Tikka T3 hunter.

Until I can afford a Nightforce/Swaro, I will probably throw a Zeiss Conquest (4.5-14x44) or something similar on. LINK

That should fulfill my hunting need. For my long range shooting, I want to get a drop-in chassis system that I will be able to drop my rifle into without any smithing. I will use an XLR Evolution chassis for this LINK

This is what it looks like with the rifle in it.

It comes with 5rd and 10rd AICS DBMs which is very nice. No need to throw new bottom metal on either. It is literally as simple as taking the rifle out of the Tikka stock and dropping it into the XLR. Very easy, and this setup should fulfill both of my needs.

Thoughts?

I had no idea there was such a thing. Almost enough to make me want to shoot a rifle again.

Got any links to shooting info on it? I'd be interested to see how accurate it actually is first. I can see the tacticool attraction of it but from a serious accuracy perspective I also see what appears to be extraneous crap which leads me to wonder what their thinking is.

All those rails out there are just keeping the barrel hot and what the frick would they be for anyway on a long range rifle? Long range accuracy is about repeatable harmonics. Anything that doesn't help that, probably hurts it.

Yeah but what's the point? You don't need a flashlight, laser, grenade launcher, washing machine etc on there. It's a long range rifle. Why have a barrel shroud at all?

Only reason is tacticool factor.

I can see having one rail up close to the action on the opposite side for mounting your dope computer or something but come on...

I totally agree with you. The pics I posted were from some guy who added the rails and stuff. Mine would look like the chassis pic but with the rifle in it.

The chassis is very lightweight and the AR-style grip is very comfy. That's why I'm drawn to it. I am also looking at the Whiskey-3, but I'm leaning more towards the XLR.

I'd probably get it in .308

Thanks, TTT. I think it would be pretty badass as well

Jim, 800 for rifle, 800 for scope, 850 for chassis. 2400 give or take a hundred or two

Fax, I think you will like the Whiskey 3 better because of no shroud and the more minimalist approach. Like I said, though, that guy's XLR had some extra shite

My other option would be a ground up build

Surgeon action and bottom metal
Krieger or Douglas barrel
Timney trigger
McMillan stock

With the other nexessities and accessories, that'd be over 5200 with no optic, but that would be the new benchmark for range dick measuring

For my long range shooting

What kind of long range shooting do you do? Are we talking about competitive shooting or casual long range shooting?

That's the same exact thought that came to my mind, as well. Should be pretty easy to compare the accuracy of an action/barrel in a basic stock vs. the accuracy of the same action/barrel in the tactical stock.

I don't fully understand the project, yet. Are you going to use a single action/barrel and change it out between two different stocks depending on what your needs are or are you talking about 2 different guns, a Tika action/barrel/wooden stock and a second Tika w/ the tactical stock? If it's going to be a single action/barrel split between two different stocks, I'm skeptical that taking an action/barrel from a well fitted and bedded wooden or fiberglass (my choice would be the latter) stock and putting into the tactical stock is going to make the gun significantly more accurate. A large part of a gun's accuracy is determined by the barrel and action. The stock shouldn't have much effect on the accuracy, as long as there's nothing really bad w/ the stock. Of course, synthetic stocks usually have better repeatable accuracy than do wooden stocks because the fiberglass is not susceptible to swelling, warpage, etc. like wood.

Getting into competition. My boss shoots 600-1000yd F Class competitions that I'll be doing with him. He has the AICS AX chassis for his Remington 700 and absolutely loves it.

Yes.

Boss and his friend have chassis systems and have said that they have been more accurate. The reasons you listed as well as their input are the reasons why I'm willing to experiment and see how it works.

If I can't find comparison data, I will do an experiment myself. I have a lot of the same questions that you and fax have, which is why I came here to ask
