Well, I guess it's settled then.

Makes sense. And until the scholarship limit is raised, issues like this will happen

Very true. An 11.5 limit has been around as far back as the 60's when I played. Tells me that maybe the NCAA doesn't think much about baseball.

That may be accurate, and it could be raised to a more reasonable 15-18, if not more. The only thing I can see is maybe the NCAA wants to keep baseball in parity. A lot of schools may not be able to afford the higher number of scholarships. Not a problem with LSU, but maybe others.

One positive about the 11.5 is that as a player, you know when a school REALLY wants you, as opposed to just stockpiling talent, or keeping it from other schools.

The limit used to be 13. When title ix was enacted it was reduced by 10% to 11.7. I thought that happened later than the 60s but I could be wrong.

Either way, 11.7, 13, still not enough.

I want to say it went to 11.7 in the late 80s

Did he have that awesome of a senior year? I remember a previous thread on him and the consensus seemed to be he would be at LSU, unless taken like top 2 rounds. They said he was a diehard and wanted to be at LSU more than in the minors, unless the money was that high.

ETA: Deichmann fell out of MLB.com's Top 100 Prospects... Hope that bodes well for LSU

Deichmann has the same question Bregman had. They know he can hit, but they don't know exactly how to value his bat because they aren't certain where he fits defensively. If they think he projects up the middle he is worth a big bonus as is. If they think he has to play a corner then the big bonus becomes uncertain because they would have to bank on power development.

Going by that Top 100 list it seems like we have little to no chance of keeping Marshall from GA or Bradley from MS.

Those are the two I feel least confident of getting here.

It is amazing how far opinions can vary on the same player. I saw a note on Bradley a few days ago that said his hitting is questionable and power is his calling card, and in the link above they say he has an advanced bat.

Mayo is usually plugged in though so that isn't a good sign for us.

The way I look at it, football has 85 scholarship players on the team for 22 starting positions. Baseball has 11.7 scholarships to spread out over 35 guys with 9 starting positions. This breaks down to not very much per player. This has always seemed crazy to me!

The guys that are being talked about (draft risks, etc) are getting the full ride most likely. Not sure how TOPS fits in all of this per NCAA rules.

Here is some good reading for those who don't understand the nuances of the draft and why players get picked where they do (and signability):

https://www.yougoprobaseball.com/signing-a-professional-baseball-contract.html

https://www.yougoprobaseball.com/how-much-money-do-minor-league-baseball-players-make-get-paid.html

FYI, here is a link to the late April Draft Rankings for the Deep South I area, which includes colleges and HS in the LA/MS area. As you can see Nola on top, but Laird at a potential 5th round pick may also be a casualty. This may rapidly change as the draft gets closer and how the college playoffs go.... LINK

I believe Decihmann would be a draft eligible sophomore. Something else that could help us.

Deichmann is overrated. Didn't even post a top 3 avg on his high school team the past 2 years

Normally the juco names would have leaked out if we had signed any in the Fall or Spring, so I'm assuming we don't have any at this point.

But they usually add a couple over the Summer after the draft and other attrition has shaken out.
