Surf fishing GI this coming W/E
Posted by LSUCouyon on 6/10/13 at 4:41 pm00
Will be there Thurs- Sun. Are the trout still biting? I haven't been in years and am truly wound up about going. Any tips, ie, tackle, where to fish etc? Have had great trips to Elmer's Island but it's been probably 7-8 years since I've been down there.
What say the OB?

Thanks. Do you know if the trout are still off the beach?

The trout will be on the beach for another month, maybe longer. Find either clean water or bait.

Thanks again. I am excited as hell. Hope the wind doesn't kick to bad.

I've been 2 of the last 3 weekends. Used croakers under a popping cork both times and had much better success than shrimp.
Also, you'll usually catch bigger trout and avoid the hardheads with croakers. Let your cork sink for a full 3-1000 count and then gig the hell out of them on the hook set. You'll get em in the lip almost every time.
Set the hook too soon and the trout doesn't have time to get the croaker in it's mouth and you'll miss them.
My son and I were actually counting out loud 1-1000, 2-1000, 3-1000 and then setting it. Its hard to wait and not set the hook when your corks been destroyed and your rod tip is starting to pull down, but you'll get the hang of it.
Tides don't appear to be that good for the 14-16th, but if the wind will cooperate you should be able to get into some action.

I might be there with my family too. Plan to hit the beaches I suppose, if we go.

the tide range will be fine. not too strong to dirty up the water, and the bait will be in the water/ hence trout too.

Thanks everyone. Glad to hear I stand a good chance to catch some decent trout. Seems the weather will be OK. Are cockahos plentiful?

I get mine from Coastal Bait. If you're headed on LA 1 towards GI they're literally 150 yds on the left before the road going into Elmers. Their croakers have been 2.5-3.5 inches long with an occasional "big one" around 5". So far size hasn't mattered. They all get blasted if the trout are there. Had a 14" trout bomb a huge 5.5" croaker two weeks ago when I was at Elmers. I just knew it was going to be some monster trout and then I pull in the smallest trout we caught all day. I had to laugh.

Hopefully the wind lays down for you. We fished after the rain Sunday evening and until 3 pm yesterday. The water was muddy everywhere. We could never make it out to the beaches. There were 6-8 foot rollers coming through the pass. We fished the rocks and islands all around the north side and caught plenty fish but 4 out of 5 were too small.

Thanks. I hope the damn wind lays. Nothing like trying to surf fish with waves slapping you around!
