Anyone here ever do the UT MBA program in Houston?

Just wondering what the networking and overall experience is like if anyone has done it or thinking about doing it.

I've enjoyed mine a bunch. Great if you work in O&G as at least half the class does.

Getting ready to start recruiting season in a couple months, looks to be good also. Down side is everything is in austin because we recruit with the full-time program.

Any insight to the full-time program....particularly recruiting?

What do you want to know specifically?

It's extremely competitive because the FT program is only ~250 students in a year

IBD and PE opportunities, particularly in Energy. Everything I've seen seems like it places extremely well, but I can see how it would be competitive.

Great. I'm not in O&G. I am actually in sales/management for a steel manufacturer. I was hoping to use an MBA to try to get out of sales. You think this program can offer opportunities for that? I'm also not sure if I could get in since my background is sales. My GMAT and GPA is really good at over 680 and 3.69.

You'll be fine, B-school is full of sales people, Its most a bunch of Type A personalities.

What do you want to do? Whats your undergrad?

Most of the finance related fields, especially IB, you are better off coming out of a FT program. It wasn't feasible for me to do FT, but I'm looking into PE but I have lots of experience in O&G that im hoping to use as a leg up.

I'd like to get into Finance, but I realize that's difficult from the PT program. I guess I could do marketing or consulting work and be happy, but I really would prefer finance.

Unfortunately, it's "general business" from LSU. Thought I was going to law school and just skated through. I decided I didn't like the price tag or career law school had to offer, so I fell into steel sales.

Um if you mean IB, yea its hard, but its doable. You may have to start in something thats not as sexy first.

Marketing and consulting are very doable. We put a lot of people in Deloitte and Alvarez and Marsal(they actually prefer to recruit PT programs v FT)

Oh, I absolutely know IB is not going to be doable immediately, which is why I'm open to marketing and consulting. Reason being, is if a financial opportunity comes along, I'll take it, but I won't take lower pay.

I actually have experience helping to implement SAP and management experience. I have had to review SAP and its functionality across several different departments and I really enjoyed that. The only thing is that my title the whole time was "sales." I just happened to be the "youngin" in an office of dinosaurs, so guess who got nominated to go to corporate and learn SAP so I could come back and teach it to every department of the mill.

I just would want/need a job that pays very well if I did the UT program as opposed to something cheaper like UH since it'd be coming out of my own pocket. That's 40k vs. 100k.

You have to think long term. Understandably you don't want to take a job making 60k, but you have to think what are you long term goals. Don't take a job just because its high paying.

Oh, absolutely. I understand that 100%. I'm not a salary chaser.

it's just if I have to pay 100K for a UT mba, I can't afford to take a 60k job. I'd need something 85+ at least.

Well in the last 3 years unless you go into non-profit, every job industry had an avg salary above 80k.

Consulting, finance, and Energy all had averages 100k or higher.
