First offshore (Fourchon) trip of the year was "kind of" successful (no pics)

Was hoping for a good day Friday, but we had a lot of work to do around the camp and getting the boat ready. We weren't able to leave the dock until 4:30 in the afternoon. We shortened our run and ended up at a block of rigs about 25 miles out of Fourchon. We hit one and had a couple of nice red snapper on board within 15 minutes, but it quickly died off. After trying unsuccessfully to hook up to another rig, I talked everyone into hitting a little satellite rig. Sure enough, the red snapper were thick. We caught our quick 4-man limit (plus 1 mangrove) then headed back in before dark. The sunset on the gulf was pretty awesome.
So, Saturday was a real joy. There were tons of boats on the water. The more boats, the more total assholes you encounter. Getting out of the pass was silly. We had a late start looking for live croaker (to no avail) and when we finally got to the rig we found them at Friday, there were boats everywhere. We ran out to about 35 miles and there were still boats on every corner you could easily tie to. We ended up finding one rig that had a corner. The current wasn't in our favor, so we had to use the motors to keep us off the rig. Anyway, I was struggling to tie up, so I was making a racket. Doesn't take long before I'm hooked up with a lemon. Decent one, but we lost it on a busted gaff. Finally saw some boats leave my favorite rig and pulled up to it. Quickly caught our 5 man limit of reds and were able to land one nice grouper. Others were just not getting the hook for whatever reason.
Right before we left, we tried one last time for a big grouper on the boat road. Well, as we're dropping the line, LWF shows up and is asking each boat what they've caught. They didn't check anyone, but reminded everyone about the landing permits.
It could have been a better weekend, but we had some projectile vomiting that we needed to end.

I think one of the guys got a couple pictures of the grouper and a big snapper from day 1, but I didn't really consider the haul "pic-worthy." Also, we had so much work to do that I just wanted to get the fish cleaned.

Absolutely

I can make some sense out of that. The guys fishing that same rig in a 21 foot bay boat are a totally different story. You can't fix stupid.

I just looked through the pics on my phone and the only thing I have is one of the guys passed out drunk on the couch. Sorry, guys.
I will say that the snapper were mixed in size. There were enough there that we were culling the small ones without hesitation, though.

We caught 50 on Saturday. 42 mangrove and 8 red snapper. We also found the sharks and bluefish too.

I had two guys pull up on the Midnight Lump in a 16' flatbottom in the winter.

I went 7 miles on Saturday in pretty calm seas and didn't really care for it. Not that I'm worried the boat can't handle the seas, just the one motor deal weighs on my mind. Now if I have a sister boat I wouldn't hesitate to run 25-30 miles.

We tried one of my favorite spots on Saturday and it looked like a boat parking lot, even the reefs had 3-4 boats on them.

Get you a pathfinder offshore rig.
We didn't have too many boats out were we were. However, the was an a-hole in a rigged out contender that came haulin arse through the rig while we were hookin up to it.

Nah, just gonna buy an offshore boat in a couple years, once my retirement plan kicks in.

Dude, I hadn't even heard of those rules and had the regs on the boat. I actually showed it to them, the guy taking information looked at it, nodded, and I put it back int he box....
I did some quick searching and the only information I can find on that is with regards to a Florida season.
