I was fresh water fishing yesterday and caught two mullets on nightcrawlers in fresh(not brackish) water.

I never knew they lived in fresh water, much less eat worms.

There's a pile of them in the Calcaseiu river way above the saltwater barrier. I see them every time I go.

I've seen them off the dock behind the house (fresh water but tidal). I've caught them with a cast net.

My Daddy's family in south Florida always told me that large freshwater mullet were great to smoke.

I just couldn't get one to light or figure out which end to suck.

I have caught several on night crawlers as well. And yes, they ate tasty. Fillet and fried. No problem.

Mullet.

I used to catch them with a castnet for cutbait in saltwater.

We normally see them in the fall on the Diversion. Large schools. They really were not around last year, I wonder if the hurricane messed them up...

They're all over the Red River. They eat moss off rocks though. Never heard of catching them on bait.

One thing I noticed.

Their white stripe was clean and their colored stripe was a combo of bright blue and green.

Next time I catch one, I think I'll grill him.

I used to catch them in a local pond in St. James Parish as a teen. Great fun and I used dough balls as well.

They live in fresh and saltwater, but must be in saltwater to spawn. They make a run down the Mississippi River to the gulf late fall every year.
East coast people eat the shite out of them. I never tried them, but was told that if fried, it is like bacon.

I've caught tons in a cast net. Cut them up for trot line bait.

My younger brother and I would catch them like that and sell them for cut bait at the local bait shops. Cane pole, bb shot, float and a worm
