CB coverage stats from 2012. Let's just say PRob had a bad year...

So we didn't have anyone on the best list...
But poor PRob was on the worst
However, I wonder how much poor safety play played into some of his poor metrics. I am also curious how the change in scheme will help him.
One interesting point from the "best" article is that these rankings are very inconsistent year to year. The author is trying to figure out why, but he forgets that in terms of advanced metrics, overall defensive performance varies a lot year over year.
Another takeaway, IMO, is that the consistent trait of the top ten list is that it is made up mostly of nickle corners every year.
PRob was at his best in Williams' defense as a nickle corner. Perhaps that has more to do with it than just playing in a press man system.
There is still a great deal of value in having solid play from your nickle corner--teams are in nickle about 60% of the time in today's NFL. Our problem right now is that we seem to have more CBs better suited to play as nickle guys than we have to play on the outside.
Maybe Lewis can solve that. We'll see.

One of the knocks against him coming out of school is that he was simply a press man corner, and one of the knocks on Vacarro is that he's been used mostly in man coverage. Zone coverage is a completely different skill set. It can result in more ints, but I prefer the definitive nature of the aggressiveness of press man scheme.
One of the things that was killing me about GW before he left was his move towards off man coverage. You knew the blitz was coming, and the lane for the hot route was right there. One missed tackle and it was off to the races.
If you're going to be aggressive and blitz, your secondary needs to at least disrupt the route and give the blitzers time to get to their destination.

Jesus christ this was miserable. Send the house and all the opposing QB had to do was flick it out to his hot for an easy conversion. Obviously hes a DC for a reason and I'm not, but mother of god, that was maddening not seeing him adjust at all for that.
I don't get why Prob seems like he fell of so badly. Dude has all the physical tools. Half the time when he gets beat, he can still make the play. It's either he just didn't turn around or just didn't time the jump right. I mean he's so close. Hopefully as the nickel CB again with Lewis coming in, he'll thrive again.

P Rob sucked in college so why would he be good now?

PRob (like many defensive backs) has to be used correctly and played in a scheme outside of his strengths, is subject to be abused. Cornerback success, probably more than any other position, is heavily dependent on scheme.
PRob has his limitations for sure and is not a Revis-type "any down, lock down" corner, but he does have athletic talent and good value. I hope Ryan exploits Prob's abilities better than Spags did.

There was a problem when Bobby Bowden wouldn't even co sign him coming out of FSU

Fred Thomas and Jason David wish people made so many excuses for them when they were sucking arse.

When was he ever good? I'm still confused as to why the Saints drafted him. Not like he dominated college.

He played really well the 2nd half of 2011.

it factors in, no doubt about it. P-Rob deserves some blame but this is still a team game the last I checked.
most of the time, our defense was dreadful to watch last year. But they did come up with more turnovers than I think most realize. I mean, frick, P-Rob had a 99 yard interception return for TD in the Eagles game. He also picked off Aaron Rodgers who usually takes care of the ball pretty well.
but... I have a question. Why do you think the Saints were pressing hard to sign Asomugha? I mean sure, he knows Ryan's system but I found it pretty interesting beyond that. We bag on Robinson all the time but I think Jabari Greer hasn't exactly been tearing it up on the other side either. Don't get me wrong... he's the best corner we have to my knowledge at this point but it just seems like he gets a pass on here a lot.
maybe they were pressing hard for Asomugha because our corners have a tendency to get hurt a lot, Greer being one of them. I don't know, just a thought.
We've read a lot of nice things on Lewis and I'm looking forward to seeing him out there in our secondary.

I've been saying we need to start looking beyond jabari. He's been getting burned a lot lately and can't recover when he bites hard on a route. His tackling had been almost non existent too.

Giving WR,s a clean get off on the line of scrimmage will get any corner beat! You have to get your hands on the WR and disrupt their route! Something we did not do last year in that soft zone coverage! Press man will help Prob out alot1

The exclamation point is a privilege not a right. Quit abusing it.
