I have a 4x4 tacoma. Every time I drive over cobblestone or hit little bumps it feels as if I can feel something loose in the floorboard and in the steering wheel. I don't hear any noises, just a loose kind of feeling. Anyone have any ideas what this is? The truck has 170k on it and this loose front end is driving me crazy. Don't want to take to mechanic and have him rake me over the coals. Someone at work suggested I look at the steering rack bushings. It almost feels as if the front tires aren't mounted tight. Hard to describe.

Tie rods?

Check the bushings on all the steering components. If there is any significant play in the tierod/draglink/trac bar etc, you may need to replace something.

eta: I just went through something similar with my Jeep and the tie rod ends were completely shot.

I'm going to start with the cheap fix first and order some steering rack bushings from Energy Suspension. I guess it's just going to be process of elimination. I'll try the tie rods next. Is that an expensive fix?

Tie rods or ball joints or something.

Pretty cheap to do yourself but a PITA. Not cheap to pay somebody for all of it, but just tie rods is pretty cheap.

There's ways to check if they're badly worn. Watch YouTube vids

Did you buy it new? It could possibly be a frame problem. Toyota has a buy back program for trucks with frame rust that's pitted or has holes in them.

Google it. it's a sweet deal for the consumer.

You can at least take it to the dealer expressing your concern for the frame and have em take peep. You will most likely get a diagnosis for free from the experts.

Just tell them you think there is something wrong with the frame.

Check the simple stuff first like shock and sway bar bushings.

Sounds like steering parts though. You have 170k on it. Spend the money, get OEM parts, and get another 170k out of it. Suspension work is cheaper than a down payment and a note...

Changed shocks a while back. I ordered another set of those too with some bushings. I'm going to start there first. I'll look into gearbox and tie rods next. Thanks for all the help! I'll give a update when I figure this crap out.

Aftermarket shocks tend to crap out quicker than OEM stuff. Fair chance they are your problem.
