Most local grocery stores carry crawfish tails from Ville Platte

The "Boudreaux's" crawfish tails are from China

Any of the AG stores around BR almost always have some fresh during season-Matherne's and Calandro's for sure, as I've seen them there in the past few days. You can use the Chinese ones to save money, although throwing in a handful of chopped up rubber bands would be even cheaper and pretty much as flavorful.

I noticed at Dorignac's in Metairie last night that they had what looked like some really nice packaged Louisiana crawfish for $13.99 a lb. It was a real 16 ounces not the 12 ounces I see usually. These were from St. Martinville.

Its hard for a processor to make money selling crawfish tail meat @ $9.99#..... doesn't it take 9-10 pounds to get a pound of meat? If so that would mean the processor would almost have to have their own ponds. Or pay fisherman less than .75$# for their catch?

I could buy peelers for $10 a sack a few weeks ago, don't know what they're going for now.

you can expect about a 17% yield with that

The plant I use charges about 3.50 a pound to peel them

Where are you shopping?

I bought some for that price right before Easter, on sale at Albertsons. By Good Friday they were back to $16.99 a pound. $12.99 a pound the last few weeks.

I always look for the certified Louisiana logo and even then read all the fine print to make sure it's a Louisiana product. Last few times they were a combo of wild caught and pond. And they were delicious.

A couple weekends ago I peeled 21 pounds of med-large crawfish and ended up with 3.5 pounds of tail meat, so 6# of med/large crawfish = 1# of tail meat. Also interesting, a quart ziploc bag stuffed full with crawfish tails is around 2.5# FWIW.

ETA: 1# crawfish tails in Shreveport is running $13.99 at Brookshire's. Not sure about other places.
