So I haven't been surf fishing since I was a kid. Just wondering what all I should get. Please not that I do nothing but freshwater fishing normally, so have nothing for saltwater and am clueless when it comes to bait, gear, etc.. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You need something to put the fish in when you catch them (a floating basket is nice) and you need to put a marker on your rod so you can check the size of trout to make sure they are over 12"...

Use your freshwater rods and reels. Just clean them after using.

I bought this one a few years ago, for saltwater only and it stillworks fine today.

hand net
stringer or floating fish basket
hat
something to hold extra lures
stainless pliers
Chaco sandals

wading belts are nice. real issue is bringing fish under control to put on stringer or in basket. trout flip off easily. also, need extra lures in case you break off on fish or rocks. Alx and i watched dude on rock breakwaters walk all the way back to shore when he got hung on rocks. brought one lure back, got hung again, then totally raped by jellyfish as he waded out to try to save lure to avoid walking all the way back in. I once had to give Danny Wray an extra lure one morning after he broke off his topwater near me. You'd think a pro would know: Bring extra lures brah!

anything like pliers, make sure they have a lanyard. You will lose anything not tied down...

Add:
1/4 ounce egg sinkers
Croakers
bait bucket
floating bait basket

to the above suggestions

For rod n reel, use whatever you use for freshwater (assuming we're not talking about 5' perch poles). You can always get a cheap combo at Academy, etc. In fact, I won a Southbend combo at a rodeo a couple years back. I'd probably never buy it, pretty sure it is a Kmart or Wal-mart brand, but it does just fine. It's maybe $25 in a store.

Hi-jack - can you guys tell me what a southwest wind does to the beach out there? Seems like it would be good because it would push clean gulf water up to the beaches, right?

For carrying fish in I use a laundry bag with a styrofoam float inside.

One word of caution, be very careful around the rocks. If you walk near them to fish the other side be aware that there is usually a drop right in front of them. A couple of years ago I was walking to the rocks since the tide was fairly low to fish the other side, and I stepped in one of the holes and just lightly hit my knee on the rocks. I bring my knee out of the water just to check to see if it looks I will bruise, and noticed two pretty decent sized cuts on my knee. I was a trooper though, I went back to the truck, got the bleeding stopped with a beach towel.
I still have two nice reminders on my knee of that day.

For artificials

Skip the soft plastics and get a pink/chartreuse mirrodine.

For holding additional lures. I took one of the large insert bait boxes and drilled a hole on either side. Tied a cord to it to rig as a shoulder sling. The box also has a ruler on the lid. If not I would put a maker on my rod so you can measure the trout.

some floating baskets will have a rod holder and a small tackle box attached, add a small landing net and maybe a pair of pliars and you are set. Here is my setup:

I haven't been in years myself, but I will be there next Thrs, Fri Sat and Sun. I hope the weather is good and the trout are there.
It is my favorite fishing when they are biting well! Let us know how you do.

You can get a floating bait carrier with locking door. A fishing belt is pretty handy for tying the net, bait box, tools, extra tackle. I have to get in the attic to find my stuff.

That was early May, usually catch my biggest fish of the year at that time.
