Can we talk about the Oakland Athletics?
Posted by Bluegrass_Cat on 6/4/13 at 5:52 am00
The Oakland A's, who won the AL West last year, have won 15 of their last 17, and yet get no attention.
I'm not sure why they get no love nationally. All you heard in the off-season was how they are a fluke, got lucky, etc.
I think it's time to accept that Oakland has a hell of a team. And no I don't want this to be like the Indians thread a few weeks ago because they always play good in May and fade.
So what say you MSB...can/will Oakland win the AL West again?

Can they? Yes. Will they? Maybe. It depends on who the Rangers get in a July trade and if the Angels starting pitching can recover.

Josh Reddick has done pretty well for them coming back from the DL

I picked them to win the division this year and I am still sticking behind my pick.

I said last year after we beat them that they were no fluke and would be contenders this year

Honestly, I'm not even considering the Angels at this point. They just got swept in 4 games by the Astros, and have honestly looked like shite all year long. By this time last year they had somewhat started to turn it around. Their starting pitching is horrible, and probably won't get MUCH better.
For them to get back in the hunt, they're going to have to go on a run much like what the A's are on right now, and frankly I don't see that happening.

The A's are the real deal. As a Ranger fan, I have been watching what they were doing closely, although only through box scores and having watched most of the 7 games they have played with the Rangers. It is amazing how few of their players are recognizable outside of maybe CoCo Crisp. THis is probably why they dont get much attention. But dont let that fool you. I believe the Rangers are the better team, but I could definitely see this one being a close race down to the wire. In the end, the Rangers depth will probably be too much for the A's to win the division.
If they were not in the same division, and if they weren't located in God awful Oakland, I could see myself pulling for a team like them. It is amazing how poor their attendance is with a team that is as good as they are.

With that pitching staff, their manager, a well-rounded offense, and the chemistry they seem to have in the clubhouse .. I think they win the AL West by at least 3 or 4 games.

Thats because the sports media was too busy claiming the precious Angels of Anaheim to be back

That being said, I wish my team was half as good as the A's.

Kevin Millar has been all over Oakland since spring training!

Astros just swept the Angels And took 3 out of 4 from the Rockies last week. A little momentum for that team could go a long way. I'm not saying the Astros will win the AL West, but they could be a spoiler. Oakland is lookin good though!

No.
The Orioles fit this too. Last year labeled a fluke. Even more so when they didn't make any major moves in the offseason. They keep right on chugging.

FWIW I agree with you and watch the A's closely as well, and agree with all that you have said.
However I don't necessarily think the Rangers are the better team. The A's have the best bullpen in the American League, and I think have better pitching overall.
Obviously the Rangers have one of the most potent offenses in baseball, but I think overall the A's are slightly better, and I'm not sure if this should count but I believe the main reason is that Bob Melvin is YEARS ahead of Ron Washington as a manager.

Not sure if serious. But Houston will not spoil anything in the AL West. The two teams competing for the division (Texas and Oakland) dominate Houston. Make no mistake Houston is still terrible. Don't let a good week out of six months fool you.
