I have seen the Star Trek Next Generation series and the corresponding movies but I haven't seen any of the originals with Captain Kirk.

would I be okay watching Star Trek (2009) and then the new one or do I need to go back and watch the original 6 first with kirk?

seen the tv series?

you should watch the original tv series before going into those old ST movies.

the prevailing wisdom was every other ST movie was good 2..4..6...

I haven't seen the original TV series. Only seen Next Generation TV series and movies.

Unlikely I will sit down and watch the entire original series - unless I am giving a really compelling reason. Is it that good?

Completely okay just starting with Star Trek (2009) - the only thing it has in common with the earlier products are the character names.

I think you'll be fine just jumping right into the new movies. They make a lot of references to the original movies as it is the same timeline but different reality or somesuch timey wimey nonsense.

The Original Series (TOS) is much, much better than any of the movies after Star Trek IV. It is the best of all of the series (although it is hokey and dated at times, once you watch the core "A" grade episodes, you get why it has had such an impact), although DS9 is also very good.

Watch some episodes of the original series. A few suggestions:

Where No Man Has Gone Before
City On The Edge of Forever
Space Seed
Devil In The Dark
Amok Time

Then watch STII The Wrath of Khan

After that you're on your own

If you don't care to get the references made to previous series/movies and just consider '09 and '13 as space action films with wholly new characters, then have at it. you'll have a blast.

just don't come here asking a bunch of questions,

And Journey to Babel, Courtmartial and about 40 others - that show was f*cking awesome.

At the very least, watch 2-3-4 (maybe six) of the movies to get a feel for the originals.

You'll appreciate the new movies more with the references to old school.

Ideally watch the above movies with the original series.

I was limiting myself to five. With more, definitely BOT, maybe Doomsday. Shore Leave is not a major episode IMHO.

I might also include All Our Yesterdays. The Kirk scenes are nothing special, but I think the Spock section is important for his character. It was intended to be the series swan song (it was shot after the cancellation notice) but a scheduling snafu kept it from being the last episode aired.

We use Spock's Brain as a trivia team name, in honor of the worst episode (until VOY: Threshold, of course, )

Are you trying to scare him away from the franchise?

You realize that because of that movie Roddenbury was removed from any direct creative influence of all things Trek?

And you want him to see that FIRST?!

Don't over-think it. You don't need a working knowledge of street racing to watch Fast and Furious. Just rent the Star Trek movies and enjoy.
