I need to dig a trench to run electricity to my shed. I know I can rent a ditch witch, but was for looking for a cheaper alternative. Thought about trying to use a middle buster, but its pretty hard ground. Anything else to try? Ground is too hard and it's too far to do by hand.

Hw much power and how far? Ditch witches are cheap in the long run, unless you have to drive 2 hours each way to rent it.

Call a carpenter and ask him for information for whomever he uses and hire them to just come out, unload their trencher and dig. Easy money for them and easy way for you...win/win.

Ditch witch. You could probably rent one for a half day at about 50-80$. It is so worth it. Trust me, I just hand dug trenches for a new irrigation.
