This is one of my favorite side items for steaks. I cooked some prime ribeyes for my wife's birthday this week. Since everyone has done steak pics here, I figured I'd show y'all the lettuce.

Sliced in half and rubbed with olive oil and salt/cracked pepper.

On the grill for roughly 2 mins per side. You want to wilt and char the lettuce slightly.

Done. You can serve individually or chop for a salad. My kids didn't used to eat salads, but they eat this. No dressing required.

I cook the steaks first and let them rest before serving. That gives me plenty of time to plate the grilled lettuce hot along with the rest of the meal.

Looks good, I'll have to try it. One of my favorites is grilled broccoli done the same way.

That looks great. You don't use anything except EVOO, salt and pepper? No lemon juice or vinegar? I have not grilled lettuce, yet. I guess living in Florida, a cold salad just seems better. I am relocating to Portland, OR, and I went to the farmer's market downtown, and they have some fantastic looking greens that would be great for grilling on a cold, wet summer day in Portland...

ETA: You could have given us pictures of your steaks, too. I mean, that never gets old for us carnivores...

I like to grill romaine and then use it in a Caesar salad, not sure who did it first but Boucherie introduced it to me. Also Batali has a great recipe for radicchio stuffed with cheese and then grilled.

That looks great! Check out Alton Brown's version of this - his version has a slushy frozen vinaigrette that goes on it. I made it before and it was delicious.

ETA Recipe:

Grilled Romaine
Recipe courtesy Alton Brown, 2005

1/2 cup red wine vinegar
2 hearts of romaine, rinsed and patted dry
1 tablespoon olive oil
Freshly ground black pepper
1 cup finely grated Parmesan
Vegetable spray, for pan

Place vinegar in shallow pan and place in the freezer. Allow the vinegar to freeze, approximately 2 hours. Once frozen, scrape with a fork to create a shaved ice texture. Return the vinegar to the freezer until ready to use.

Cut each heart of romaine in half lengthwise so that the root keeps each piece together. Lightly brush the cut side of the romaine pieces with olive oil. Season with the pepper. Place the cheese in a shallow pan large enough to lay the romaine in and press the cheese firmly onto the cut side of the romaine until it adheres.

Spray a nonstick griddle or saute pan with vegetable spray and preheat over medium-high heat. Place the romaine in the pan and cook until the cheese turns golden, approximately 1 to 2 minutes Place the romaine, cheese side up onto plates and sprinkle with the vinegar ice. Serve immediately.

I'm trying that tonight with my steaks. Another good but odd thing to grill is canteloupe? Very good on a scewer wrapped in bacon!

I've never heard of grilled lettuce before, I'm intrigued.

is Romaine the best for it?

I silently wondered if you were my dad there for a minute

I remember he made some grilled lettuce with crumbled bleu cheese and bacon once. It was ridiculous

Many years ago, I went to an Italian cooking class and one of the things they grilled was radicchio sprinkled w olive oil. I found it to be very bitter and couldn't eat more than a bite or two.

The eggplant parmesan was awesome though.
