Exactly. I don't see what a not fully healthy Laird gives us when we have Stevenson/Foster/McMuffin to hold down the three spots if needed with the fact that Newman would need to be called on if the series went longer than the minimum.

What happens if something crazy happens and we are forced to play a 4th game ? I'd rather Newman at this point than anyone else

I think that's the point. Apparently, he is not viewed as the 4th starter. So, there is no need to keep a 5th starter...given that he wouldn't be one of the top 5 guys out of the bullpen either.

DO we know that Newman did not make the roster? SEC rosters are 25...NCAA is 27...who are the 2 over the regular 25?

SEC actually upped their rosters to 27 this year.
