I read here the trout were in the surf last week. Any recent reports? I haven't been in years and am thinking about making a 3-4 day trip. Reports anyone?

Weather is going to be terrible for an Elmer's Island surf trip for the next few days. I talked to a buddy down there yesterday and the wind is blowing like a bus load of figs and there is a lot of rain in the forecast.

Have heard some reports from the gi surf, but it was muddy last weekend. Not expecting it to be much cleaner with all this wind. But this is the time they should be there.

Son & I fished Elmer's beach Sunday morning. Caught 16, none less than 15/16, missed about 5/6 more. Was a little rougher than I would have liked and the shrimp boats dragging had the water a little cloudy. Will be back weekend of June 8th. Because of rough surf, best technique was drop-shot with a 2 oz lead and live shrimp suspended about 6/8 inches less lenght than the weight.

I imagine the fish are in the surf, but with nearly no tide movement, rough seas and isolated thunderstorms through the weekend I wouldn't even consider a trip down there.

Thanks for the responses. Consensus seems to be don't go this weekend, then. Can't remember the latest we used to catch fish. Anyone advise as to latest?
I do remember about many years ago during last weeks of May and early June, several trips to Elmer's yielded boxes of trout in the surf (weather permitting) also no limits!. I haven't been down there in about 7-8 years.
Any help appreciated.

You can catch them all the way through July in the surf, it seems to me the average size will get much smaller though.

They were there last weekend. Croakers were the ticket, but with this crap weather, I would stay at the house. Then again, you can't catch them on the couch.

I went down last Saturday for the first time. It was rough, windy and muddy from the waves and small armada of shrimp boats dragging the bottom 100-200 yards offshore. I caught two white trout on live shrimp. I didn't see anyone out there catch anything.

I think I know some of what I did wrong, and plan on heading back down next Friday or Saturday. However, this weekend, it's a crap tide. Winds have also been steady 7-10+ out of the south all week and it looks to stay that way through at least Thursday (per the extended Intellicast forecast). Doesn't bode well, but the tide is strong at the end of next week, so if the winds lay down a little, I think it may be fishable (though I don't know much).

Also, all of Elmer's was open Memorial Day weekend. However, it looks like it is returning to the provisional opening, and only .5 miles of beach to the east of the end of the access road will be open. I don't know whether that is enough beach open vs. how many people will be fishing, if it is a good section of beach, or if that even matters.

My plan next weekend is to fish Elmers at daybreak if possible. If too rough, I'll hit some back side/road spots until the state park opens. On Grand Isle you have the rock piles which I assume break up the waves a bit and also create good fishing area. But the state park doesnt open till 7 (which seems stupid). I'll also get some croakers too this time. I've never really fished down there, but have made it my goal to study it and keep trying until I get some good results this summer and fall.

Question on Grand Isle beach - if I want to fish around the Safeway store, where do y'all park to do that? Looking on google maps, it seems most of that stretch of LA1 is not suitable for parking on the shoulder, and most of the beach is fronted by camps.

They closed it for Isaac last year, then tar balls washed up so it stayed closed. They "provisionally" re-opened it in February or March for 30 days, which they have since extended monthly. Only .5 miles east of the road is "open." They opened the whole island for Memorial day. I didn't even realize this till after I went.

where to park

there are public parking spots all down the beach, mixed in with the camps, so you can walk over and fish.

if the wind is still blowing out of the south, the surf will be too rough and muddy to do anything. find something on the backside of the island, or in the marsh.

Thanks. That's generally my plan. If it stays real windy, I may skip the whole trip and boils a sack of crawfish instead.

Thanks, I check weather reports and postpone until I see a good time. I can go anytime, not just the weekend, so there is that advantage.

Aside: has anyone stayed at the Water Edge camp? I talked to them a day or two ago. We used to stay in the little suites they had years ago . Kinda rough but really enjoyed the locale and access to beach. The lady said all they rent is the camp that sleeps 7 (if some of them are kids).

Yeah, seems the smart thing to do. I can remember as I said earlier, many years ago being able to camp on the beach at Elmer's, back when it was privately owned. I think they charged $5 then.
One of my fondest memories of my late Dad was a 2-day trip we took with a friend down there around Memorial Day in the early-mid '80s. Got there early afternoon. A little front had moved in and a light north wind was blowing. The water had been rough before that but the wind was smoothing it down. We caught several trout before dark, some 3-4 lbs. Then cooked steaks over an open fire with salad.
Several bottles of wine and beer later we crawled in Dad's camper. Slept like a baby to wake up to Dad beating on the side of the camper at daylight yelling," Get your asses out of bed! THEY HERE!!" He had caught several and we were still asleep.
We filled up a couple of ice chests that morning, two at a time on Shad rigs under a cork. The shrimp were in the little waves and you could see the trout slashing at them.
I'd give my left one to be able to re-live that with Dad

Think of making a GI trip this weekend too. Weather not the best but that doesn't stop the party.
