LINK

Anyone else see Orson Scott Card is releasing (with a co-author) a new Ender's Game book?

Supposed to be about the Formic Wars. Not sure what to think, and surprised I hadn't heard about it. Good timing with the film set to come out.

You realize this means that he is starting to do the Tom Clancy route of ghost writing where he gives someone else an outline and provides feedback and direction.

Well, he is one of the most prolific authors out there and has been for decades. He deserves a break.

I just finished the second installment of his new series (the Mither Mage Saga) and enjoyed it. My favorite book by Card is Treason. For some reason, I love that damn book. The Worthing Saga is a close second.

As for ghostwriting, you would be surprised how many famous authors hire ghostwriters. The last three Harry Potter books were ghostwritten. All of Dumas' works were at least partially ghostwritten. It's a common practice.

I hate that. I actually like OSC's writing style although I've only read his "Ender" novels. Clancy I can take or leave, but the co-author stuff was worse than his actual work. Arthur C Clarke's co-written stuff is almost unreadable, but that's only a slight downgrade from his usual stuff. I like his stories, but can't stand his prose.

I do a lot of ghostwriting. I don't write fiction, but I do write articles for trade magazines, national publications, nonfiction books, memoirs and autobiographies under other people's names.

So, I have some professional connections and that was the scuttlebutt back when they came out.

It's really not a big deal. Author gives the ghostwriter an outline. He then writes the whole thing. The billed author then takes that draft and goes back over it to give it the right feel. They might expand a scene or tweak the dialogue. it's really a partnership, and there's nothing wrong with it. One author gets the fame. The ghostwriter gets a paycheck whether it sells or not.

Most publishers have a database full of discrete ghostwriters.

Alexandre Dumas died penniless. His ghostwriter Auguste Maquet died rich.
