I am looking into purchasing a kayak or canoe, but I am not sure which will be better suited for me. I will be using it strictly for fishing, so I plan to put a trolling motor on it. I will probably get the Ascend FS128T if I go with the kayak. I will buy used or a cheap canoe from one of the local outdoor stores if I go with the canoe. Here are some advantages I see in each:

Kayak Pros:

1. Lighter, easier to transport
2. Easier to paddle and tracks better
3. Let's face it, a kayak just looks more badass

Canoe Pros:

1. More stable
2. Can fit 2 people, so more room
3. Cheaper in my case

I am leaning towards a canoe as of now. I like the idea of being able to fit 2 people comfortably in a canoe.

Any thoughts/recommendations are appreciated

In General:

1 man kayak is the way to go.

2 man canoe is the way to go. (especially if you are camping or on a long trip since it has the storage capacity for more gear)

Kayak is better in shallow water, less than a foot.

Canoe takes the advantage for being able to mount a trolling motor. (transom or side mount)

That's the only point I think you missed. A wide kayak is a lot more stable than any canoe. Something that should be an important factor that you didn't mention is WHERE do you intend to fish?

I never fished from a canoe, so I can't really say which is better. I can tell you I have the FS128T and for the price, you can't beat it.

There is no question about this. Kayaks are much more stable than canoes. A kayak is essentially a plastic air bladder, where most of the air is concentrated around the gunnels of the vessel by design for stability. In a kayak, the center of gravity is at the deck where you sit.

On a canoe the center of gravity is raised 4-8" above the deck due to placement of the seats and there is no captured air in its gunnels for stability.

I wasn't sure of this, thanks for clearing that up. The FS128T seems to be about as wide and stable as they come for that price.

Then go with a kayak. You won't regret it.

FWIW I have back problems and I can't sit in a canoe for more than an hour but I can spend all day in a kayak.

I'm a big guy, so I went with a 1 man canoe. Plenty of room for my long legs, an ice chest and milk crate. There is even enough room for my dog to ride along. Plus it was under $500.

I went with the Old Town Guide 119 in Camo from Dick's. LINK
