if you have a permit, sure.
if you don't make sure it's not on your person

I'd like to know what States, besides Lousisian, allow you to have a pistol in your vehicle.
Based on Carson's response I assume Texas too. What about Mississippi, Alabama and Florida?

Bama is pretty strict about not having ammo near the gun and neither can be easily accessed by the driver.
If going through bama I lock mine in my trucks toolbox and ammo goes in the glove compartment
In Texas the gun can't be visible if its in your car/truck
I believe FL and MS are pretty much the same as LA

Interesting.
That's good to know if I'm a car jacker.

Yeah doesn't make much sense if you ask me.
If you have a CC permit that doesn't apply though

Mississippi is pretty strict too. Guns and ammo must be separate.

Especially in a such a supposedly "gun-friendly" state. If MS is the same way like Sammich says, that sucks pretty bad too.
As stated, in TX, you can leave it in your vehicle loaded, as long as it isn't in plain sight. You should be just fine.
If you have other questions on laws, check out this link. It should answer all your questions.

I need to be careful saying too much. This is what I remember when I had to take my hunters education course many years ago. However, I am very confident that this information is correct.

Mississippi Statute states (relevant portion):
SEC. 97-37-1. Deadly weapons; carrying while concealed; use or attempt to use; penalties.
(2) It shall not be a violation of this section for any person over the age of eighteen (18) years to carry a firearm or deadly weapon concealed in whole or in part within the confines of his own home or his place of business, or any real property associated with his home or business or within any motor vehicle.
SOURCES: Codes, 1880, Sec. 2985; 1892, Sec. 1026; 1906, Sec. 1103; Hemingway's 1917, Sec. 829; 1930, Sec. 853; 1942, Sec. 2079; Laws, 1898, p. 86; 1960, ch. 242, Sec. 1; 1962, ch. 310, Sec. 1; 1991, ch. 609, Sec. 4, eff from and after July 1, 1991.
It's posible that this cite is outdated, but handgunlaw.us has the same info.
Texas used to prohibit carrying a loaded handgun in your vehicle w/o a permit. But the law was changed a few years ago.
To the best of my knowledge, Alabama still prohibits having loaded handguns in a vehicle, unless you have a valid CCW permit.

Thank you for looking it up. The information that we were taught was that any firearm in any vehicle had to be unloaded. My information is more than likely outdated and what you provided is correct.
I have my CCL and do not worry about any of these silly laws anymore.

This ^^^^^^
People complain about the expense, consumption of time, dilution of their rights, etc, etc, etc.
I think it's a good, inexpensive "vaccine" that helps prevent problems and hassles.
