My trial for brewer's friend ran out, so I decided to make the switch to Beersmith. I find this program extremely overwhelming to get started, even for extract. Any advice on getting started using it?

yeah.... I played around with it a good bit for the first few days.

You know the size of your brew pot and everything? Adjust your equipment and input a recipe or two and the next time you have a brew day start inputting all of the numbers that you come up with from your Pre boil OG and post boil OG etc.

You're going to get hooked and start yourself

And then drinking really starts getting pricey

I've got a few gallons fermenting in the garage that cost about $6.00... Hopefully it doesn't taste that cheap!

I used BrewBlogger and TastyBrew, the free versions, to work up everything for my 1st full grain batch. I just did a small test batch to ease back into things.

I've been using it for better than 5yrs. You just need to play around with it. There are some things it does that I still don't fully understand like splitting the batch sparge up.....

Any questions just post them and I'll try to answer.

Expensive? All of my brews have been ~.80 a beer or less

Sure, the ingredients are cheap. And the initial capital outlay doesn't have to be outrageous. But the more you brew, the more you find equipment to spend money on.

This

I've spent as much on upgrades as I did on the initial investment. And I still haven't gone to all-grain

I haven't brewed in awhile but I had started using Brewmaster BC the mobile and computer programs sync with each other.

It's very convenient using my phone during the brew. Mostly to get hop additions correct.

Beersmith has a brew sheet you can print. I haven't checked to see if they have a mobile app yet. Typically, I set my mash and ingredients and print my brew sheet to follow. Never had an issue.

I know. That's what I did before brewmaster. But I can add ingredients to my stock from my phone and it will show up on my program. Can also make up a recipe on my phone easily while at work and have it when I get home.

Just sayin that it is convenient. Nothing earth shattering but in my experience in owning both, they are both similar but I'd rec brewmaster because of sync'ing (I I had to rec one)

I'm pretty sure you can adjust that setting to where you tell it to fill 90% of your tun up and completely drain tun before sparging.

It was one of the first things I looked into when I brewed my first all grain recipe. I was very confused by those instructions.
