These are all words and just plain rhetorical BS

Is Obama saying we are winning the war or have won the war? Did AQ and other terrorist proclaim or gesture any sort of peace because I don't remember hearing this?

Basically the criticism of droning has only come from libertarians and some liberals....clearly it's favored bipartisanally...Obama just has his back against the wall and is making a play much like he did with gay marriage and immigration ref during the election.

Some Democrats who back closing the camp also say its steep cost - $900,000 per year per inmate compared with $65,000 at a U.S. supermax - might prompt some fiscal conservatives to rethink Guantanamo in a time of budget austerity.

Find out who's benefiting from the $900,000 per inmate per year and that should shed some light on the reason it's so important to maintain this cash cow.

My guess would be it goes to private corporate government contractors that are getting very wealthy at the cost of tax payers. They could pump a small percentage of their loot into buying political clout (lobby) and what's left is all gravy. Just an opinion.

I would be happy if this were a genuine attempt, but I am rather skeptical at this point.

especially since most of the prisoners will be sent to overseas prisons.

The problem with that is they seem to "escape" in short order. Then they are killed or captured in Asscrackistan not long after.

re: Obama wants to end 'war on terror' but Congress balks

quote:

One reason why the Pentagon needs to build a costly new facility has to do with the role of private contractors in driving detention policy. At Gitmo, corporate contractors run the show. They share signage with military units; enjoy better housing than military personnel; run the food services; and import Southeast Asian workers to build the gigantic infrastructure, which was new when I visited in 2009 (calling into question the “deterioration” cited to justify the latest cash infusion).

Contractors also ran the military tribunal facility, and even set policy – deciding, for example, what could be told to the press. Based on some disputes that I witnessed, contractors appeared to outrank soldiers.

The vast, often undocumentable profits that flow to these companies go a long way toward explaining why facilities like Gitmo – and privately owned and operated prisons in the US itself – never close. The transfer of public money to private corporations is far more attractive than old-fashioned market capitalism.

I know, the author is a feminist, but I think she brings up some good points.

re: Obama wants to end 'war on terror' but Congress balks

quote:

Obama called for an end to a "boundless global war on terror"

We hear much about the President making his previously-scheduled campaign trip to Las Vegas on the night after the attacks (Sept.12th - was the actually the night of the later attacks Libya time). But while we have seen the late-morning Rose Garden clips over and over where he spoke in general terms of "an act of terror", how did he describe it to his followers in Las Vegas that night?

"LAS VEGAS- At the end of what he called a "tough day," on which it was learned that four American personnel were killed in Libya, including the U.S. ambassador, President Obama used a campaign rally to talk tough, vowing to "bring their killers to justice." His audience of some 8,000 supporters gave him a thunderous cheer.

"And we want to send a message all around the world to anybody that would do us harm: No act of violence will shake the resolve of the United States of America," he declared.

That was it. Didn't say "terror", "act of terror", "terrorist" or "terrorism".

-----"act of violence", i.e., "don't worry folks, we got this covered" ...

And then you write

quote:

Don't know why the Republicans aren't behind closing Guantanamo even if it would mean coming up with an idea or two of their own. (do you hear that McCain?)

So you ACTUALLY believe it cost 900,000 per year? Seriously?

Tell me this, How much does it cost the US to put a person on welfare and housing?

Please think before you BUY what is written.

Actually the first part was a quote from the article.
quote:

That's what the article quoted, and it sounds about right.
quote:

Tell me this, How much does it cost the US to put a person on welfare and housing?
Way to keep on subject. Isn't there some medicine you can take to stay focused or something?

The 'old guard' Republicans are almost as much a joke as the Democraps. I just wish we would pull out of Afghanistan and the Middle East in general...nothing for us but trouble.

I was starting to think even non progressives were not seeing the media throwing these little diddies of complete BS in there.

And Vegas Bengal, Obama had plenty of time to close GTMO when he had a super majority.

I just read an article on Obama's speech and the author points out how Obama blames congress more than once and then says I will do this and that oh but I can't. The woman that heckled Obama got it correct. If Obama wanted to close GTMO he would. The entire speech; as cwill pointed out, was just Obama pandering the his base. It means nothing. But it also clearly shows (to those of us not spinning BS for Obama) how either Obama is a terrorist sympathizer and or an idiot if he thinks because he says the war on terror is over, that it actually is.

if only 1 side ends war while the other keeps going it's called a surrender.
