Would you buy your next new car online?

LINK

This article made me wonder.

Would most people rather buy a new car online, e.g. through Amazon.com or directly from the manufacturer, if given the chance?

I didn't realize it was a law that cars had to be sold through dealers.

Do I have to pay sales tax?

If there was a noticeable price difference, yes.

That would be a very good plus.

Sales tax on a new car around here is about 3%.

That would be great because here it's 10.5% on a car.

They are going to try and keep a dinosaur system around a little longer.

Just like the U.S. Tax system.

It wouldn't work if it was a set price. People like to haggle.

I for one would support this. I hate the fact that you have to haggle for a car. I have always believed a company (regardless of the product) should sell a product for a set price of what it costs plus their profit. Why should I pay one price and the next person pay another price for the same product? I think this is part of why car salesmen get a sleazy rap. To cover the perceived benefit a dealership gives to a community, you could have a small percentage of the sale of the car go to the parish/county the car will be registered in to be used for youth activities.

Then why don't you buy your vehicles from a "one price/no haggle" dealership? They have the selling price clearly marked on the vehicle. Everyone pays the same. These dealerships as a whole don't make it because people LIKE to haggle and always think they can get a better deal. As much as people bitch about the negotiation process , it is purely consumer driven.

You are probably not going to save on sales tax. When you register your car in your home state they will charge you whatever your rate is or the dealership may charge you the tax in your state. I live in LA and bought in GA. They charged me LA tax

Yes. I generally hate dealing with the salesman. The car buying process is a PITA.

If dealerships didn't try to screw their customers every step of the buying process I'd care more about them and their argument. I bought a Honda in March and I refused to even show up at the dealer until I had the price I wanted on the exact car I wanted. Those pricks tried to reneg when I got there and added things to the car I didn't want.

If you could price shop haggle-free prices online, nobody would care about negotiating.

Your premise is wrong. People don't like to haggle, they do it out of necessity/the pre-conceived notion that the dealer is ripping them off and they can get it for cheaper if they play the game. You ever go to a grocery store and think, "damn, I'm getting arse raped paying $.99 /lb for these bananas."? No. You walk in believing that prices are fair and competitive and therefore have no reason/desire to negotiate.

I bought my last car online.

Well I did the majority of the shopping on line through TruCar and Edmunds. Eventually I was put in contact with a dealer in Shreveport and I got my current car for just $700 dollars above invoice and below MSRP.

Overall it was a painless experience and when I showed up to pick up the car it literally took 15 minutes and I was out the door. 10 of those minutes was me test driving the car while they finished the paper work.

When I got back from the test drive I sat down and signed the papers and I was out the door. No BS about trying to sell warranties, no BS about bogus protection plans, etc.

People like to think they got a deal or that they got one over on someone else, which is why haggling will always be there.

Only given the current dealership model of car sales. If it went online and pricing became more open and transparent, buying a car would become more like buying anything else. You haggle when buying electronics on Amazon? Didn't think so.

If pricing was more open and transparent had would the dealer make a profit. The car buying public by and large views the dealer making a profit on them as them getting ripped off.

What do you view as a fair and acceptable profit for a dealership to make when you buy a car?

The same way anyone makes a profit selling anything...

I've sold cars before. What's fair is whatever a customer is willing to pay. What does a dealership have to sell a car for to make money? That depends on volume, overhead, etc and would be determined by the market like any other business or product.
