For me its Tora! Tora! Tora! since it shows both sides before, during and after Pearl Harbor in the movie

Me either. I would love to go back wherever my ancestors were and would fight with them

Cannot think of one I would rate above this due to re-watchability. Good answer.

I wouldn't count it.

It's great, but you can do so much more with the extra time to tell a story.

there is no "best" war movie

Some of my favorites are

Paths of Glory
Men In War
Hell Is for Heroes
Fixed Bayonets
Northwest Passage (set in 1759, during the French & Indian War)

Which show war not as glorious adventure or action movie but as a dirty job that has to be be done.

I'm not half the man that those men were and don't have a tenth of the balls they had. I'd watch on a hill from afar.

It gets panned a lot, but I loved Gods & Generals. I'm sure part of the reason I like it so much is that I've been to several of the locales.

Apocalypse Now

Countless memorable moments and scenes from the film. The focused plot, soundtrack, editing, cinematography, etc. So many great things about it.

The Thin Red Line due to the cinematography/score, even though most hate it. If my father had to pick one (as a real veteran), he'd say Twelve O'Clock High.

Braveheart
Platoon
Gettysburg

The music is important in dramatizing war movies. These have the right music.

Glory. Cinematography is amazing and the story in and of itself is riveting.

Agree with Glory. The last scene where they start double timing along the beach gives me goosebumps every time

Excellent choice, and one of the greatest (though sad) surprise endings in film.
