home defense pistol, smith and wesson M&P.

Before the ammo scare I would say the 9mm because of the wide availability and that 9mm is all around the world.

I'm not so sure if that holds up any more.

Is there a particular reason you don't want a 45? Just curious.

9mm.
Using modern self defense ammo, 9mm and 40 S&W are equally potent at stopping the fight. OTOH, compared to 40, the 9mm:
-is less expensive.
-will usually carry 1-3 more rounds when comparing similar guns.
-has less recoil. The main issue here is NOT, "My 40 doesn't kick bad," but instead it's a question of how quickly the shooter recovers from a shot so another shot can be placed on target.
-has better supply of ammo.

Some of the above are generalizations that have temporarily been altered by Sandy Hook

I own guns in both calibers. If you're asking me which one is in the top of the nightstand, it's the .40 caliber. My CCW is a 9 mm. .40 ammo will definitely be more expensive when compared to the 9 mm. Go with what you like.

With some of the newer 9mm cartiridges and the ballistics they show, I don't think you could go wrong with either. With the ammo scare of 2013 I think 9mm has been easier to find than 40.

I make a little jab that this topic has been discussed ad infinitum and you get your jimmies rustled. Relax. It's a fricking message board.

Eh, it varries. In the midst of the scare I worked in Oklahoma, Montana and Wyoming. In ok the .22 was the hardest non AR round to find

Wyoming my dad couldn't find 40

Montana 40s were abundant.
