Wouldn't someone taking on Marion mean Dallas could offer CP3 and Dwight near max deals?

Just because Dallas can offer the deals doesn't mean either or both will take it.

CP3, for instance, apparently wants that extra guaranteed year from the Clip Show because he's worried about his knee holding up. Going to Dallas means forgoing at least $20m in guaranteed money, if not more.

do you have any numbers at all to back up this claim?

No, that's why I said "seems". It's just my opinion and preference. If I was in the position to actually draft players I would look into more, but as of now I just have my own bias.

At 13, I don't mind it so much. Actually would like it. And yes, I'd take on the salary for 1 year to get another young prospect. But Marion had already said he doesn't want to play for a bad team. Maybe he opts out of his player option for next year if he's traded to us?? Haha I doubt it works that way, but would be nice.

Do not want Bennett. Don't need that defensive liability.

Do you think he would be a defensive liability against 4's or against 3's?

I think both. With him it looks like he has no desire to play defense. Complete lack of effort. To be a good defender, you have to want to be a good defender.

Not quite. They'd be at $31.8 million with Dirk, Vince Carter, Jared Cunningham and Jae Crowder, and 8 minimum cap holds. If the cap goes up to $60 million that means they could offer Dwight and CP3 about $14-$15 million each when both are expecting to get in the $19 - $20 million range. We've seen stars take that paycut in Miami before so it's not impossible, but it's still a lot of money to walk away from.

Yeah I get all that, but they also have the no state tax in Texas so they wouldn't be walking away from that much should they re-up there. Point is im not so inclined to take on Marion's contract when that increases the chances of CP3 and Howard teaming up in Dallas.

I think he has to opt in before the start of the new league year, which would be the earliest point at which we could make the trade anyway.

At that point, he has the option of reporting, retiring, or taking a buyout so he can go play for a contender.

Athletes incur tax in the state where they play each game, not the state where they are domiciled, so the amount he'd save by living in Texas is overstated a bit given that the Clip Show can offer him a larger base salary than Dallas can.

Oh BTW on Marion... he has a 15% trade kicker on his contract, per Spotrac, so he'd cost us about $10.4m before the incentives he is likely to reach.

I would be very happy with Otto, Nerlens, McLemore, Oladipo, and Burke... can't make up mind on Bennett.

Yeah I know that as well. Here is an article from Hoopsworld. It's based on if Dwight would go to Houston, but the same rules apply for CP3 and Mavs.

quote:

Approximate Yearly Salary with the Lakers:

Year 1: $20,513,178.00
Year 2: $22,051,666.35
Year 3: $23,590,154.70
Year 4: $25,128,643.05
Year 5: $26,667,131.40

TOTAL: $117,950,773.50

Approximate Yearly Salary with the Rockets (or any other team):

$20,513,178.00
$21,436,271.01
$22,359,364.02
$23,282,457.03

TOTAL: $87,591,270.06

quote:

Adjusting that number for California’s state income tax, however, Howard would actually make $1,094, 342.38 more as a Rocket playing the majority of his games in a state with no income tax because he would save $4,786,713.82 in taxes.

I did your research for you:

I actually did a little on my own after you asked about it. This is a list of international players drafted top 10 from the years 2000 to 2009 (I don't think we can judge players from drafts after that yet) and how I would grade them.

2001-Pau Gasol-A
2002-Nene-B
2002-Nikoloz Tskitishvili-F
2002-Yao Ming-A(when healthy)
2003-Darko Milicic-F
2006-Mouhamed Sene-F
2006-Andrea Bargnani-C
2007-Yi Jianlian-F
2008-Danilo Gallinari-B(has potential to be better)
2009-Ricky Rubio-B(Has potential to be better, but also missed two seasons)

I guess from this it looks to be a 50/50 chance of a bust, which is probably close to the same as players who attend college and play ball in the states.

i just like to have numbers to look at, or at least some names and such, like you did. creates better debate. FWIW, I do agree with you.

I was a big fan of the NBA in the 02-07 years and I guess I remember all of the busts from those years. That's really what I based my opinion on, but it's nice to see the stats and actual names to back it up.

Why would the Cavs take McLemore when they took Waiters last year?

The theory is that they could have Waiters come off the bench like he did in college and play a significant role there, and also go small ball.
