Why is Ray LaMontagne not insanely popular?

Dude is one of the best artists of our time, and I don't say that lightly. He's amazing. His songs are incredible, which makes me wonder why he isn't as popular as John Mayer or other singer/songwriters.

I've always enjoyed his music. He has a great voice and is a pretty good lyricist.
