Stark Article: Never been anything like Mariano Rivera in the history of Sports

Just a snippet of a fantastic article:
quote:

Think about this, ladies and gentlemen. Mariano Rivera is older than Benny Agbayani -- and he's leading the American League in saves.

He's older than Darren Dreifort -- and he has a sub-1.00 WHIP (0.92).

He's older than Rich Garces -- and he's ripped off 17 saves in 17 opportunities. (*UPDATED with last night's save*)

He's older than Carlos Perez -- and those poor hitters who face him are batting .118 (2-for-17, with seven strikeouts) when, by some miracle, there's a runner in scoring position.

Meh, in some cases, I agree. In the case of Mariano, he's just the GOAT.

There may be a shred of credibility to these statements, if that much.

But regardless of how you feel about the stats and the position, Rivera is not overrated and his impact on the Yankees throughout his career can not be over stated.

And I hate the fricking Yankees.

He's the best of his era, but it's much easier now in the era of the 6-pitch save than it was in the era of the 2-inning save.

It's not his fault that managers have figured out how to use a pitching staff more effectively as time has gone on.

He is amazing. I thought he was too old and should have retired around 2002-2003. Yeah, I'm an idiot.

While in general I agree with these statements, Rivera is one of a kind. He is so far above the average closer that he is the exception to these statements

I watched him close out Baltimore last night. He is amazing to watch...by that, I mean I have no clue why he is as effective as he is.

His cutter was between 89-90 mph. He hit 91 once. Many of the pitches for strikes (which was probably 80%) were simply watched by the batter...never got the bat off the shoulder.

To an admittedly untrained eye, it seems like these hitters...the best in the world...should be eating him alive.

He throws two pitches...one of which he throws 90% of the time.

some pitchers have a pitch that guys just can't hit even when they know it's coming

It's what makes the great ones, great

If you look at it in a vaccuum then sure. A guy like Mo is invaluable though. How many guys perform their job at that high of a level, that consistently, for that long?

Every time I think it is almost time, he comes out and goes on a tear. I really don't want him to retire just to see how long he can go.
