Should the Lakers amnesty Kobe to get CP3/Howard?
Posted by NawlinsTiger9 on 5/20/13 at 5:58 pm00
Let's say Paul would play for the Lakers if they had the cap room, and let's assume that the reported tension between Dwight/Kobe is true and that Dwight would stay if Kobe was gone.
Kobe is older and coming off a severe injury; he's also owed about 30 million next season.
They'd probably have to trade Gasol, too.
If Paul and Howard are willing, and the Lakers can make the numbers work, then it basically comes down to a choice between 4-5 years of CP3/Howard, or one (maybe more) year(s) of Kobe and who knows.
A few add-on questions if the Lakers did amnesty Kobe, extend Dwight and sign Paul: would this be the most despised team of all time? People hate Dwight pretty badly already, Paul will have fuucckkeedd the Clips and the Lakers will have cast off their hero.
I think we can all agree that the aforementioned is most likely the best long term plan, but will the ill will generated by such decisions be enough to keep the Lakers from doing it?
They have to at least be considering it, right?
Also, I think we can all agree that a core of Paul and Howard is beyond solid. The Lakers are a free agent destination, so who could/should they add with those two?
Where does Kobe go and how scary would a more motivated than ever and pissed off mamba be?
*Simmons did mention this in his latest article. I'm not trying to rip him off, just generating discussion.

Amnesty-ing Kobe and Trading Pau for pure cap (which is not possible) still gets them no where near getting Paul/Howard.

Nah they cant.
Basketball reasons.
Basketball reasons.
quote:They'd have to salary dump Metta/Blake/Hill (some combination of) to get there. If the dump Kobe, Pau, and get rid of all their non-guaranteed deals/terminate qualifying offers, they're still at like $25m in salary.
I just looked at the numbers and if they somehow traded Pau for pure cap they would potentially have enough.
Assuming cap # of around 60m next season. That gives them 35m free. Dwight will close 20m. CP3 18m. So they're still short, unless they can also dump one of Metta, Blake or Hill. But then their team is Nash/CP3/Dwight and ?!?!?!?!?!?
Not sure it's a smart move unless Dwight/CP3 take a pay cut.

if you amnesty a player(kobe bean), are you allowed to resign him? or is there some type of rule that prohibits that?

I thought the cap was around 70 mil.

Teams will have to pay a maximum amount if they completely blow by a tier, increasing from $7.5 million to $8.75 million, then $12.5 million and $16.25 million respectively. This year’s cap is $70.307 million, and next season’s will be roughly the same.

Plus someone would pick him up, I'm sure.

The cap is not set yet. I don't think they announce the new number until closer to the new league year.
It was $58-60m last year with $70m being the luxury tax threshold.
Even if it increases a bit this year, it shouldn't make the leap from $60m to $70m.

The cap will be between 58-60 million. The higher number is probably the luxury tax number.

That site is wrong. The luxury tax is around $70m. Cap will be around $60m.
quote:Eh problem is there is a lack of those type of players. Plus Miami had room to sign Haslem and Mike Miller in addition to already having Chalmers under contract.
Just like the Heat, by year 3,they can add solid vets for cheap and be a real force.
Not saying they can't do it. I just think they'd need to ship Nash out as well to give them some more flexibility. Then you start having to wonder what kind of draft picks it's going to cost them to perform these salary dumps. And other costs like not being able to resign Kobe after his contract expires after 2013-2014.

I am not sure I would amnesty Kobe, but if I did I would do so knowing that he would likely sign with a Western Conference team and be a roadblock to the Finals until he retires.
