I've thought about this before and I think it has to be The Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding. Find me 1 person that doesn't like that song

The Beatles -- Hard Day's Night.

For my money, it just doesn't get any better than when he sings "I should be sleeping like a log". Amazing band. fricking epic.

Impossible to nail down, but y'all have hit one some great ones:

Everlong - Foo Fighters
Just Like Heaven - The Cure
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zepplin

I'll add these two:

Sultans of Swing - Dire Straights
Bye Bye Miss American Pie - Don McClean

Fortunate Son by CCR is my Platonic ideal for a rock n roll song.

Big Star - September Gurls

edit: Ok, if the one above is 1a, this one is 1b... hard to call..

The Ronettes - Be My Baby

I heard Kelly Willis doing When My Baby's Beside Me last week on Sirius, and it took me a while to find out what it was from. Some sort of tribute. The Matthew Sweet version of Goodo was pretty good.

Blackbird - Alterbridge

Master of Puppets - Metallica

November Rain - GNR

In the End - LP

Bring Me to Life - Evanescence

A few of those were based a little bit on success AND bias.

My personal when in mood. Pearl Jam "Black" live version when Vedder is mad, not happy Vedder.

All time maybe "Stairway to Heaven". And the fact that some will scoff that it is cliche points to its greatness. Played to death but still great. So great that few people try to cover it for risk of sounding stupid.

Imagine is a safe pick as well.
