Where's the representation from those teams that finished second and third?

Replace Walcott and Cazorla with Mata and Hazard and that's not a bad list.

No Mata makes this list lose all merit.

I'd have Mata over Fellaini, but this is based on their average rating system. Mata was a 7.23.
Did Mata ever have a really bad match?

Yea, it's why I don't particularly like Who Scored's rating system. It's very arbitrary and I don't know if their formula is even public?
Generally I dislike "team of the season" lists because they aren't too practical. I'd much rather a balanced XI with less of an emphasis on attackers. Something like this:
----------------De Gea
Rafael---Vertonghen---Jagielka---Baines
--------Gerrard------Dembele
----------------Mata
Suarez---------RVP---------Bale
Subs:
Benteke
Zabaleta
Evans
Hazard
Cazorla
Arteta
Toure

If he did, it was quiet. I don't think I've said "dammit, Mata" at all this season.

Not sure. I like Who Scored for the stat tracking.

You pick it like it's an actual team that's going to hit the field, not the four best defenders, three best midfielders, three best attackers.

I thought down the stretch he came back to the pack a bit, probably due to fatigue. But even when he has a bad match he still always has at least one moment where he creates a goal scoring chance for somebody, or himself, with great vision and/or an amazing pass.

I don't know which rating they used, but they seemed to disregard substitute appearances when creating their team of the season, placing him much closer to both Fellaini and Walcott.
I think that Who Scored's performance algorithm does a decent job. Certainly not a replacement for "subjective" analysis, but I usually find that their ratings are within the realm of fair.
Of course, the site's true worth is in their statistics and to find out, "Who Scored?"

Andy Carroll - 6th highest rated player this season!

I think their player ratings do a pretty good job as well.
I can't judge the EPL as well since I don't watch enough. However, for Serie A, they seem better than any other site I see.
The one thing I've noticed is that players' scores can soar pretty high based on "big plays" -- last man tackle, successful through ball etc--- compared to playing a very solid game without as many of these. Can't fault over the long term but, for example, I've seen some Roma defensive players with an 8.8 for making a goal line clearance and 3 last man tackles when positional errors probably made those necessary.
In that regard, I think their scoring system slightly awards high risk, high reward pressing styles a bit more than sides that play more conservatively.

The second I saw his absence I quit reading it. What a joke.

Looking at their summary statistics, it's pretty easy to see why (Aerial duels won/game seems to be one statistic that can significantly impact your rating).
They certainly aren't perfect, but it's more novelty than anything, and the site offers plenty more.
