Does anyone know what will happen to the team records do they stay with the "Pelicans" or do they go back to Charlotte or combined with what they have now?

Charlotte has started the process to rebrand to Hornets

I'm happy we can give their rightful name back. too bad utah are fricking pricks. I bet half of them don't even know what the hell jazz is!

Yeah Stephen A. Smithilitant says the Pelicans is a dumb nickname.
But yet it is one of the few NBA nicknames that actually has something to do with the city or area:
Pelicans, Mavericks, Nuggets, Rockets, Heat, Spurs, 76ers, Suns, Pistons.

Pelicans is better and more appropriate than:
Jazz, Cavaliers, Lakers, Grizzlies, Bobcats, Kings, Warriors, Nets, Hawks, Wizards, Raptors, Bulls.

The NBA has a ton of names that are either terrible (wizards, magic, thunder, nuggets, heat), generic (Hawks, warriors, cavaliers), or completely inappropriate for the location (Jazz, Grizzlies, Lakers).

Pelicans is IMO in the top half of the league for names. And the logo is top 5 or 10.

Charlotte hornets is cool and I'm looking forward to them getting the name back.

The opposite of everything Stephen A says is true.

everything stays w/ us... we took the franchise... history and all... so they can remember they original Charlotte Hornets history and all... but that's officially ours

they have the Bobcats history and that's it... this isn't a Seattle Supersonics or Cleveland Browns scenario where the league mandated the team history stay in that particular city

when given the chance... Benson has come out w/ a look that people have fallen in love with almost immediately

the fans voted for the name VooDoo when he began the franchise... but he came up with its look...1 that became a top brand in the AFL almost immediately... the league loved it so much they decided it needed to come back after the league reformed even though the team lost its only playoff game ever

now the Pelicans new logo seems to have caught fire almost immediately... if the rest of the look (court/uniforms) goes as well... the Pelicans could be a top brand even though the name was originally (and still kinda is) scoffed at nationally (what do those goobers know)

FWIW... I have heard (but don't know if it's true at all) that Benson wanted to redo the Saints brand when he bought the team in the 80s but the NFL told him no

That wouldn't surprise me. The team was a laughing stock when he made the purchase. What owner WOULDN'T want to get away from that image.

I will admit I was a bit dubious of the Pelicans name when I heard it, especially compared to some of the alternatives. But the more I thought about it, the more I liked it (especially compared to some of the stinkers that other NBA teams have). And then when I saw the logos I was completely sold. Excellent work on those logos IMO.

And you know what, I'll consider Charlotte Hornets top ten names and top ten logos as well.

Improvement all around!

what I like about it is that it's a tangible thing (unlike say Heat) that has local flare (unlike Utah Jazz or Los Angeles Lakers)

you can watch a Pelican fly and dive... you can see a Hornet and hear it buzz by you

it's something the people the team owner is trying to sell to can identify with and get excited about

You mean you didn't want to see the Miami Heat vs the New Orleans Humidity winner play the OKC Thunder?

What the hell is wrong with you bro-hugging nut grabbers? Screw Charlotte and everything they represent. If they represent the Hornets, screw the Hornets. Grow a set and lay off the bro love. Charlotte sucks in ways you can't imagine. There is a huge sucking vortex on the eastern coast and it is Charlotte.

@AledKennedyNBA The NBA's BOG will vote to change the Charlotte Bobcats to the Charlotte Hornets this week. If approved, name change will occur in 2014-15.

About ownership of the names: The NBA owns all of it. All of it. That's why they get to vote on it. That franchise word wasn't just randomly chosen.

Also, a little bird told me that Toronto will be the Huskies.

I doubt they will have the Huskies and the Wolves in the same league.

That was an issue in the past based on ownership's concern over log confusion.

However,

LINK

You can see that the Raptors use this throwback jersey, and the NBA also owns the trademark.

Finally, I submit: Pelicans-Hawks; Warriors-Cavaliers; Wizards-Magic; Suns-Heat; Pacers-Pistons; Spurs-Mavericks; Hornets-Hornets. Similar or related names with logos (and names) that distinguish them.

There's more.

Might it not happen? Sure. But, that's what the little bird told me, and I believe it.

Huskies would be cool. Raptors is such a lame nickname.
