This says a lot about Big Whit. He actually told the family he didn't want his name mentioned but the mom said she was hardheaded and wanted to make sure he got the credit he deserves.

Big Whit Helps Out

quote:

FARMERVILLE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The family of a Farmerville teen who died at football practice last week says it is overwhelmed by the community's gratitude.

quote:

Among those are former West Monroe football and Cincinnati Bengal's player Andrew Whitworth who said he will donate the full cost of Jaleel's funeral.

quote:

Gipson's family said Whitworth's generosity is helping to ease the burden on their already heavy hearts.

Living in Cincy have bumped into Whit a few times like at Kroger and downtown at dinner and he always is classy and gives me a nod and say I have very good taste in my LSU hats and other gear. A true Tiger through and through and has become a great team mate and pretty damn good left tackle. All Pro last season and it could not have been more deserved.

It is pretty crazy. I went to school with the Farmerville coach and you can tell it shook him up pretty good.

I went through it in 9th grade. A guy I played FB w/ broke his neck (quadriplegic). His story ended better as he recently opened his own practice after receiving his doctorate in Psychology. I wish this young man would've had the same opportunity

I went to school with him in elementary at Jack Hayes in Monroe and I want to say maybe 1 year at Ouachita Jr. High. I can't remember what year he moved.

DC? If so, I was on the field when he broke his neck. Horrible. And so tough having to actually finish playing that game. Fantastic that he's doing so well.

He went to OCS in 7th and I'm thinking Eldorado 8th. We were friends at OCS and in high school at Farmerville. We still talk from time to time. Great guy, it kills me he is having to go through this. That community has gone through so much over the last 5 years or so.

Were you at WM or at Ouachita? If you attended WM we may know each other and if you attended Ouachita we def. know each other.

It was def. crazy going through it and like you said, to keep playing made it even tougher. It's a difficult situation his teammates and family are going through right now.

To do something like this is great.

To do something like this; and not ask for it to be publicized is something even better.

It reminds me to re-examine/re-assert my faith. Jesus saved my soul, simply because he loves me....not because he wants credit or headlines.

People like Andrew Whitworth make this notion louder by doing great works, then providing faith to ALL by letting us know that there are great people out there, and that we don't need to know who they are, we just need to do what they do.

A lot of things like this go unnoticed and untold to the public. In my mind, that is the true definition of a donation: doing it so that the only recognition you receive is from the one's you donate to.

Major props to Whitworth and any others that assisted during this terrible tragedy to that area.
