Couple swept to sea by massive landslide that destroys cabin

Knox says the mountainside behind the cabin was showing signs of instability the previous evening.
“There’d been a lot of rock activity from this slide that was off back behind the cabin, all night on Saturday night. I was just kind of watching it. It was just small rocks kind of tumbling off and making a lot of racket.”

I imagine. Losing the dog was probably the worst part. Beautiful place, my wife and I were at that cabin last September.

In Southeast they are. Over millions of years things have stabilized a bit but in the fall you can get some landslides, when we get most precipitation.
Unusual this time of year though. There was one a year or so ago in Glacier Bay which was one of the largest ever in N. America.

We have them locally, mainly downtown. Avalanches are a bigger concern to us though.
In Lituya Bay, on the Western Edge of Glacier bay the largest wave ever witness occurred when a landslide caused by an earthquake caused a wave 1,750 feet high. Some fishermen lived through the ordeal.

Yeah, they were very fortunate. They seem to have handled it well though. Definitely a conversation piece at parties from now on.

The 1,750 foot wave at Lituya Bay, here are the survivors telling their story. I imagine folks had a difficult time believing them back in those days. Caused by another landslide
