What are some other good ranges in the area?

There are NONE.

I looked into opening one last year because there is a real market for one. But, it'd take upwards of $3mm for a decent one and damn near a year of full time work getting permits before you could even start building. That's 2 years with no income. I'd still love to do it if the right investor came along.

You can probably get away with this at Academy since their workers are too dumb to know this law.

WHat law are you talking about?

C. A firearms licensee may not sell any gun or ammunition to anyone under the age of 18 and
may not sell a handgun or handgun ammunition to a person under the age of 21.

It doesnt mention who can be with you.

Maybe it's not a law, but just their store policy. (editing post now)
The owners probably view it along the same lines as buying alcohol for minors.
They tend to err on the side of caution around there - guns unloaded in the lobby, no tracers/steel core, etc.
It's not exactly a business where the "customer is always right" policy works every time.
Safety is their #1 concern. They're trying to avoid situations like
quote:

another round chambers and he drops the goddamned thing locked and loaded. The barrel was literally pointing at my foot from about 2 feet away when it hit the ground.

Ok, wanted to make sure I wasnt missing something. I can respect the business decision. May piss off a few that rarely shoot, but the diehard guys out there on a regular basis is who your business relys on and you dont want some ocassional young idiots running them off. Good way to decrease the youngins. And Im not refering to you CP3, either. There are pleny of idiots though and that would prob cut down on a few anyway. Just know what you got to do if you have to go back there.

I worked there when it was southern shooters and briefly for the previous precision owner. quit after his friends began showing up and shooting while drinking. Wasn't a bad job at the time, obviously things have changed since then

I'll keep going to Baker. Even though the guy is a convicted molesterer. I love seeing the required flyer pinned to the corkboard. Weird.

If its actually a law that they cant sell it to me, I'll take back some of what I said.

But again, if a parent goes in with a kid, guess they're SOL on buying ammo? If I had walked out and walked back in without her, then could I have bought it?

They are going beyond what they need to. Not illegal to buy a 6-pack with a minor, the problem comes when you give it to them. That said its there right to run their business the way they want and its our right not to support them with our money.

Green tip usually has a steel penetrator in it. That steel penetrator will tear up the walls and steel armor at the back of the range. Look at the walls, floor, and ceiling next time you're in that range. People shoot EVERYTHING there. If they see anything with a green tip, it can't be shot there. If it was your range, would you take that chance? There are other businesses on the other side of that wall. Just buy an $10 box of .223 and you're good to go.
M885 Pentrating 1/4" Steel

already said it wasnt 855 (green tip). this was xm193, which i brought on purpose as to not have the very problem i ended up having.

I've never been convicted on a felony.

I'm actually probably getting rid of the van and my ram, the ol lady wants me to get a nicer rig.

I don't think it's law, just their policy. They get people from "all walks of life" in there....I'm guessing they're trying to prevent crime by keeping ammo out of the hands of 18-20 yr. olds.

Next time, have them put a magnet to the bullet tip. Lead isn't magnetic. I've seen them do that plenty of times.

They DO allow parent to purchase with children. The parent has to sign in for the child if they're under 18.

They don't go for the walk in/ walk back out scenario.

But the law is illegal to purchase, not possess. I put the state statute on the first page.

yep, but it's his business, his policy.
I'm not saying I agree with it.

They didn't allow AK's and SKS for a long time.
I asked one day. They said too many dumbasses were going back on the rifle lane and hip shooting them.
Ban AK's - problem solved.
