Man dead for nearly an hour, brought back to life

u mad jesus/satan?

quote:

A VICTORIAN man who was clinically dead for 40 minutes has been brought back to life by an Australian-first resuscitation technique. Dandenong's Colin Fiedler, 39, was one of three cardiac arrest patients brought back to life after being dead for between 40 and 60 minutes at The Alfred hospital, using two new techniques in the emergency department.

If the people aren't severely brain damaged - that's a helluva thing.

ETA:

Apparently they're fine. Very specific usage for the device, though.

I would think he would have some kind of brain damage after 10 minutes I believe due to lack of oxygen.

Edited to say they pumped blood and oxygen via a portable lung machine. Should have read first.

From the article:

quote:

It allows doctors to diagnose the cause of the cardiac arrest and treat it, but keep blood and oxygen flowing to the vital organs and brain, which reduces the risk of permanent disability.

Basically they detect a heart attack about to occur... put the patient on the machine and allow the machine to do the work until they can do what they need to do to not permanently damage the heart. Not something an EMT can show up at your house and bring you back with... only good if you "die" at the hospital with the machine nearby.

Still a useful tool.

Gonna be interesting to hear the "What happens when you die" stories.

I wonder if any of them have seen the light?

Definitely interesting. I hope hospitals invest in more of those!

being a doctor, and knowing they were doing cpr and using a heart/lung machine, I find the title of this thread to be inaccurate

re: Man dead for nearly an hour, brought back to life

Had a uncle flat line. Luckily, for him, he is a surgeon and had the heart attack at the hospital when he was going to his office. Took 3-4 times with the crash card to bring him back. When all was said and done, he said the only thing that bothered him was that he didn't see any light at all. He said he remembers being asked what meds he was on and next thing he remembered was the docs telling his wife that they were going to take the breathing tube out in a couple hours. He said that was the worst part, cause he could hear what they were saying and he was trying to tell them to take the tube out now, but could move or communicate in any way.

Because his system was getting blood and 02, therefore he was alive.

Baby steps. Give it time and they'll improve it to where it is portable and be able to revive people on scene.
