im talking since 2000, b/c thats when i was old enough to really follow sports.

the lakers and spurs have dominated in that time frame, but are old and are looking to reload. i know all teams have ups and downs, and if theyve been good for awhile, they are probably looking down the barrel of a rebuilding job, but the west seems to always figure it out.

i remember in 2010 when all the big free agents were coming due, amare, melo, deron williams, boozer all went east and people speculated a shift in power. seems all that happened was the overpriced old dudes got out of the way, and now the west reloaded with studs while the eastern conference is now the miami and 7 dwarfs.

is it just cyclical? is this just a great run by the west? is there something else to it? you'd think the media in the northeast would demand them to be better, but just havent been outside of a boston for a few years. what gives?

going back to 2001-2002 season (as far back as ESPN had listed), 9 sub .500 teams made the playoffs and none made it in the west. thats almost 1 per year. just wondering if anyone had any theories of why one conference is so much stronger than the other.

Because people prefer to live in warm weather climates, and more of those are in the Western Conference.

Bc there hasn't been a legitimate post threat in that entire time period.

ETA: in the East

while i agree with your premise, it seems like the free agents have moved east, to the colder climates.

The east will be better soon:

Rose coming back will put Chicago back as a power

Cleveland is looking good with kyrie/waiters/thompson/porter? So is WAS with Wall and Beal.

Also Detroit with drummond and Monroe

I like what the magic are doing too

I think a lot of it may have to be with the coaching and the front offices of the West.

San Antonio for example always seems to make some random selection in the draft who turns out to be a damn good role player. PLus you have Pop, who has been there forever.

i definitely lean this way. in the west, you better win 50 games if you want to a ticket to the 2nd season. in the east, "just win as many as you lose"

but at the same time, you'd think over such a long period of time, they'd have a chance to go through a couple and eventually get the right guy. guess if the same shitty owner keeps picking shitty GMs, he'll need an act of god to get it right

Bulls 2 years from now will have Rose and Noah as the core 2 pieces:

1) Decide between Deng or Butler or keep both depending on Deng's price (Butler likely isn't going anywhere though)

2) Boozer gone after next season (amnesty)

3) Mirotic (best player in Europe) coming after next season

4) Charlotte pick unprotected in 2016, which could be huge because Charlotte isn't getting any better.

Bulls next year will be in good shape if they draft Withey (most likely pick according to sources) to back up Noah and find suitable replacements for Nate and Marco (maybe Marco stays, but I doubt it.)

In short: Bulls will be in the top 2-3 in the East for years to come (obviously health is a big key)

It use to be way worse. Early 2000s the title was the WCF. It's pretty even now it's just this year guys like Rondo and Rose were out. That makes a difference.

The Western Conference has the most titles since then, but they belong to 3 teams.

Two of those teams were dynasty teams. They had the corps to keep competing for titles.

That credit goes to the front office.

That's just the way the cookie has crumbled. The Celtics and Pistons have been down for stretches since 2000, the Bulls went into major rebuild mode after Jordan left, the Cavs were only good with Lebron, the Heat have had two runs with Wade/Shaq and Wade/Lebron/Bosh. The Knicks should really be good but Isiah Thomas and the ownership mismanaged the team so badly that just couldn't happen for most of that time

Meanwhile, the Lakers and Spurs have been the class of the NBA over the 2000-present time-frame and even the Mavs snuck in there to win a title two years ago.
