NTSB: Lower drunk driving threshold to 0.05%

LINK

US officials recommend lowering drunken driving threshold to .05 blood alcohol to save lives

quote:

WASHINGTON - Federal accident investigators recommended Tuesday that states cut their threshold for drunken driving by nearly half, matching a standard that has substantially reduced highway deaths in other countries.

The National Transportation Safety Board said states should shrink the standard from the current .08 blood alcohol content to .05 as part of a series of recommendations aimed at reducing alcohol-related highway deaths.

...

A woman weighing less than 120 pounds can reach .05 after just one drink, studies show. A man weighing up to 160 pounds reaches .05 after two drinks.

Lets just change the law to say: we can randomly stop you and give you a DUI.

Really! If you make homemade ice-cream and use vanilla extract, you'll be over that limit from one scoop.

Just ban any measure. If your gonna go .05 why not save more lives and go to .02?

re: NTSB: Lower drunk driving threshold to 0.05%

this hasn't really done anything to curb deaths

they use slanted samples to show a decrease, but it was already decreasing

usually they start in 1982

but, they ignore the mid-70s to the early 80s, which had an even bigger decrease

It's not about safety. It's a money grab.

I'm not sure about that. I think the real motivation is that MADD and those of their ilk is the new home of neo-prohibitionists. Their ultimate goal is making alcohol illegal.

The only way to promote that agenda is a 'save lives' mantra.

I wonder what caused that huge decline in 1981.

Michigan has been getting to this point already. I get throwing the book at repeat offenders, but this is insane.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner.

In California a ticket for not wearing a seat-belt is $18 but you'll pay over $100 because there are many "fees" added on to the ticket such as "court costs, administrative fees, city regulation fees," etc.

I agree it is ridiculous but they have always been able to give you a DUI if you have had any booze in your system. In AZ they can blood test you if they suspect you of DUI and if you have ANY marijuana in your system they will give you a DUI. You could have taken one hit 3 weeks ago and if it is still in your blood you are going away! I am very against DUI and think people who drive while impaired need to get locked up but they need to use common sense while writing the laws.

What a shitty proposal. fricking DUI is an area where the constitution seems to be irrelevant.

ETA: It really pisses me off. I'm actually considering handling those cases just so that I can vent.

When they crack down idiots worrying more about texting and dialing their cell phones than they are their driving. I'll know they are serious about safety.

Texting/cell phone use creates far more danger than a .05 alcohol level.

I'll wager a large sum that a trial lawyers lobby is supporting this too. Yes local courts make money but it us nothing compared to defending a client for DUI.

As someone who's mother is handicapped from a drunk driver hitting her head on and causing her to be handicapped the rest of her life, DUI laws are out of control.
