re: NFL joins plan aiming to create professional rugby union league in US

Rugby has the sufficient quantity of violence to become a US sport, but as of now it lacks the high school component to create a quality game. It's unlikely that will ever happen considering the safety shite football is currently going through.
Also, the conspiracy theorist inside me believes the NFL is doing this to squelch any possibility of a rival league to the NFL.

I like the idea of a rugby league here in the states...but why Miami?

ok...here is my take...
(I am very biased...I spend way too much money on rugby every year and am a paying member of a Club in Ireland)...
1) With inclusion in the olympics, it will become much more available to the US public
2) Rugby salaries are minuscule compared to our sports, and should be able to be funded pretty quickly
3) There is still a large part of the US looking for an alternative in the spring and rugby can fill that void for some
4) If it is East Coast, they will be looking for distribution rights in Europe
5) Probably a bigger threat to the CFL, because if someone can make the same if not more money in the US, they will not go to Canada
6) If I was commish...2 teams NYC, 1 in Boston, 1 in Philly, 1 in DC and look for on in either Canada or NC to start
7) Lots of questions, like length of season, where to get coaches, etc...
But I am all for it...

I like this idea. As far as getting coaches I figure they would get a few from Europe or the Tri Nations.

new scrum engagement sequence is worse than anything football has done
regarding this news, the best thing it has going for it is that it has nothing to do with the organization called USA Rugby.

This is great!
I fill my void with by watching all the international rugby i can in the spring.
all my friends that i've turned on to rugby all say the same thing...
that it would be wildly popular if there were more of an outlet here in the US

Aren't they supposed to be tinkering with it again?

Lions tour and all the other Summer Internationals coming up in just a couple weeks.
Heineken Cup Final was good this past weekend too. Even though I was pulling for Clermont. Top 14 Semi's this weekend should be good too. Should be some good Super Rugby matches too.

I'm not sure why the NFL would toss money behind rugby when it can just send down players to Arena though.
Preparing for the eventual end of football as a major sport.

I support anything that expands the game, I was hooked on rugby the minute I started playing... Hopefully this inspires some young kids to give the game a chance.

I'd say F1 ranks pretty high up there. It's debatable if racing is a sport or not but you have to be pretty fit to drive one of those cars.

perhaps its to test out how US fans feel about it for an eventual shift to more rugby like rules in the NFL regarding equipment and such?
