George Will: "In IRS scandal, echoes of Watergate"

George pulls no punches in this one: LINK [SIAP]
quote:

“He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, endeavored to ... cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigations to be initiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner.”

— Article II, Section 1, Articles of Impeachment against Richard M. Nixon, adopted by the House Judiciary Committee, July 29, 1974
Sound familiar?
quote:

Now the nature of Barack Obama’s administration is being clarified as revelations about IRS targeting of conservative groups merge with myriad Benghazi mendacities.

This administration aggressively hawked the fiction that the Benghazi attack was just an excessively boisterous movie review.

quote:

Now we are told that a few wayward souls in Cincinnati, with nary a trace of political purpose, targeted for harassment political groups with “tea party” and “patriot” in their titles. The Post reported Monday that the IRS also targeted groups that “criticized the government and sought to educate Americans about the U.S. Constitution.” Credit the IRS’s operatives with understanding who and what threatens the current regime.
Boom.
quote:

Liberals, whose unvarying agenda is enlargement of government, suggest, with no sense of cognitive dissonance, that this IRS scandal is nothing more sinister than typical government incompetence. Five days before the IRS story broke, Obama, sermonizing 109 miles northeast of Cincinnati, warned Ohio State graduates about “creeping cynicism” and “voices” that “warn that tyranny is ... around the corner.” Well.
Pwn.

And, then, this gem:
quote:

Episodes like this separate the meritorious liberals from the meretricious. The day after the IRS story broke, The Post led the paper with it, and, with an institutional memory of Watergate, published a blistering editorial demanding an Obama apology. The New York Times consigned the story to page 10 (its front-page lead was the umpteenth story about the end of the world being nigh because of global warming). Through Monday, the Times had expressed no editorial thoughts about the IRS. The Times’s Monday headline on the matter was: “IRS Focus on Conservatives Gives GOP an Issue to Seize On.” So that is the danger.

Bump. Read that this morning and just hope more people do. As is often the case, Will is dead on.

I don't know how anyone could argue with what he said. It is spot on from start to finish.

well, i think the watergate comparison is going too far. it's dissimilar in a crucial way- lack of evidence of the president's involvement.

that said, the point about NYT is absolutely apt and this was pretty funny:
quote:

Five days before the IRS story broke, Obama, sermonizing 109 miles northeast of Cincinnati, warned Ohio State graduates about “creeping cynicism” and “voices” that “warn that tyranny is ... around the corner.” Well.

A vast in depth and width investigation of these F'ing crooks needs to be initiated ASAP. I remember well getting out of school and watching team Nixon being ripped apart in the chambers of the House (interestingly enough where Hillary learned the trade of criminal activity) every day. Feet need to be held to the fire till the truth of what this administration has done across the board tout suite.

It's hard to have evidence before the investigation starts.

I see the similarities, at least. Like the opening quote of the article.

acting personally

Find evidence that Obama acted personally to target political enemies with the IRS and I'll agree that he should be removed from office. Until then, George Will is feeding grass from his arse to sheep.

Obama has an alibi, he was on vacation that week.

But we all know we won't find the smoking gun here. Nixon's tape recorder was removed from the oval office.

Find evidence that he hasn't. If we are to be required to find evidence for our views, you need to find evidence for yours.

I agree but the president sets the tone of his administration and what all this adds up to is a lack of control. The mans constant campaigning and rhetoric are opening the cracks in the wall of his disappointing leadership skills.

I doubt that Obama gave the order. The idea that government workers are inherently disinterested and don't follow the ideas if the leader, though, is laughable. The issue is that the people being targeted are exactly who he would want given grief.

Is the IRS still sticking by the line that this wasn't politically motivated?

I doubt that it's politically motivated at all. The IRS likes to profile... it's all about targeting people who are reluctant or philosophically opposed to paying taxes.
