Just ate a bunch I picked up on the way to on Grand Isle (Seafood Shed in GM). Prices reasonable so the harvest must be ok.

I am getting 25# of 10-15s today for $4.00 a lb Most of the the people I talked to yesterday said they are catching pretty good with a good mix of sizes. The concern is that the prices at the sheds will drop quickly because of the good opening.

They need consult with the crawfish guys. Go with the "We caught too many too soon so the price is high" argument.

I shrimped Monday night with some guys that have camps near mine. They were complaining about the size--not many big ones in yet.

BTW, this was my first shrimp trip and it was pretty cool the amount of biomass they take out of the water.

This is all pretty fascinating to me. I guess we are all products of are environment.

I do all my shrimping on the St. Johns River, about 50 miles due south of Jacksonville. They come up the fresh water St. Johns to spawn. Our season doesn't start (when the shrimp start running) until mid July early August.

Just wondering if the Gulf Shrimp is a different species than what we have?

I quickly Googled Florida East Coast shrimp and October to June each year is when they say they make their run. I'm guessing that's in the ocean.

I've been shrimping for over 50 years in the river and I know they come in, in July & August.

Sorry to bother y'all with my musings. I understand it doesn't apply to the topic. It just got this ole boy to wondering.

Yes, they are different. Right now, it is Brown shrimp season. The white shrimp are about to start moving in for there spawn. Brown season last to about the third week of July and white season opens around the first week of Aug. This is all inside waters.

The shrimp you are catching could be called rubyreds or something like that. I'm sure y'all have whites and browns too, but not as many.

Google Brown and white shrimp for pictures. Look very close to the heads at the swords. The browns have brown strips on each side of the swords.

Thanks Fishfighter,

Yep, we have the Whites, googled it. Never looked into them this seriously. I just enjoy catching and eating them and the benefits they bring to Bass and Reds fishing while they are running.

The St. Johns, is 310 miles long, flows north and is brackish here where I live in what is known as the lower basin. We catch flounder,Reds,Rays, Croakers ect. Fun place to live.

Oh! It appears the Whites begin their run in the Gulf pretty close to when they start in the St. Johns.
