Robert Gates on Benghazi

Which of you pretends to know more than Robert Gates?
quote:

"Frankly, had I been in the job at the time, I think my decisions would have been just as theirs were,"

quote:

"I would not have approved sending an aircraft, a single aircraft, over Benghazi under those circumstances,"

quote:

"to send some small number of special forces or other troops in without knowing what the environment is, without knowing what the threat is, without having any intelligence in terms of what is actually going on on the ground, would have been very dangerous. It's sort of a cartoonish impression of military capabilities and military forces. The one thing that our forces are noted for is planning and preparation before we send people in harm's way, and there just wasn't time to do that."

re: Robert Gates on Benghazi
When Gates was asked whether he thought that [Clinton engineering a coverup to protect her political future] might be a possibility, he replied flatly, "No."

There were reports that an unarmed drone was flying high above the embassy and sending out a video feed. 9+ hours is not enough time to gather basic Intel, especially when two SEALS are already on the ground lasing a target? Sounds sketchy to me.

ETA: You're surprised that a politician would help the probable future president avoid criticism? Gates is making a smart career move here.

In other words, "i am ok sacrificing those four people. We shouldn't risk anyone else. "

re: Robert Gates on Benghazi
Apparently someone knows better than Robert Gates because there was an aircraft over Benghazi - an unarmed recon drone. I wonder if the person who approved the drone flyover has been reprimanded.

Redeem yourself in this thread an post some Maggie pics!

Because it doesn't comport with your prejudices, obviously.

You left out this part:

quote:

Gates said he could not speak to allegations that the State Department refused requests for additional security in the months prior to the attack.

Would have been in the wrong place, but even if the rumor was that it was above the consulate, it is still a rumor. Too bad it wasn't brought up during the hearings.

I am pretty sure this is not true. Why would anyone be lasing a target when there was no aircraft using the signal?

There are questions that can be asked, but you come off as a political hack when you regurgitate this stuff.

Whatever you do, DO NOT protect American assets abroad, especially when there were pleas for help. It might offset Hillary's diplomacy efforts in the region. It was just 4 "little people". Get over it.

Gates had his own private meeting with Obama like the press. He wants his pension and he does not want the FBI searching his lap-top.

re: Robert Gates on Benghazi

"We don't have a ready force standing by in the Middle East

Well, that doesn't seem very prudent.

quote:

"getting somebody there in a timely way would have been very difficult, if not impossible."

I agree, but there was no way to know that at the time.

quote:

"scare them with the noise or something," Gates said, ignored the "number of surface to air missiles that have disappeared from [former Libyan leader] Qaddafi's arsenals."

Uh, when lives are on the line I think most would accept the risk of a few dipshits in Libya armed with SAMs. At least I would.

quote:

"The one thing that our forces are noted for is planning and preparation before we send people in harm's way, and there just wasn't time to do that."

Of course we are good at that, but combat is always a massive cllusterfrick. Our military also recognizes that they won't always have time to formulate the perfect plan and won't always have up to the second intel on the situation.

So yeah, I guess I know more than Robert Gates.

re: Robert Gates on Benghazi

Pretty much.

Aside from the attack response angle that Gates just blew to bits, it will not escape notice that Republicans are blaming Clinton for a lack of security at the consulate when it was THEY who slashed $300 million from the State Department's budget for foreign embassy security.

re: Robert Gates on Benghazi

Pretty much.

So...because a former member of Obama's own administration supports his decision, this should be settled?

Even though you left out one of the most telling, albeit subtle, quotes from him stating he couldn't comment on what went on in the months leading up to it?

Gotcha.

The dog ate my homework. What % is that of the entire budget? I also love the dramatic use of "slashed" - most often associated with "tires" and "throats".

Rex, get out of here with that bull shite. You know as well anyone that it had nothing to do with security at the embassy at the time.
