This guy mapped all the dialects in the United States (tldr alert)

Map

quote:

The New Orleans dialect has been shown to be marginal to the South in many 650 respects, and marked by several features that are distinctively northern. It is most noted for the palatal upglide with mid-central vowels [?I], resembling to the tra- ditional (and stigmatized) New York City vowel in third, first, sermon which is commonly associated with the stereotype “toity-toid”. The same phonetic form is found in Charleston, Savannah, throughout South Carolina, and eastern Georgia (PEAS, Map 25). But as this section will show, the New Orleans parallels to the New York City dialect go considerably beyond this. 950 The relation between the New York City and New Orleans speech patterns is the product of a long and intimate history of contact. Berger (1968) cites two historians to document this history. Of economic relations, Foner writes: Figure 18.13. Front upgliding vowels of Edith G., 38 [1996], New Orleans LA, TS 608 F2 750 850

quote:

In the ante-bellum period, roughly between 1820 and 1860, financial, commercial and social relations between the city and the South were at fever pitch: New York banks underwrote the plantation economy, cotton was shipped routinely from New Orleans, Charleston, Savannah and Mobile to be trans-shipped to England, and Southern plant- ers regularly combined business with pleasure in the Big Apple of the 1800s. “. . . down to the outbreak of the Civil War, New York dominated every single phase of the cotton trade from plantation to market.” (Foner 1941)

That New Orleans/Brooklyn yankee ghetto accent is absolutely horrible. I cringe when I hear people talk like that...

Where I'm from (in the middle of the state) is redneck as hell, so it's mainly regular southern accents. However, I just moved to south Florida and all the yankee/NY/Boston/Wiscaansin accents are unbelievably terrible. The way the Latinas roll their tongue makes up for it though

Couple of years ago the History channel ran a show on the history of the south and its cultures. A linguistics and dialectic expert said that the charlestonian accent was the same as british aristocracy. The only difference being the timing of the speech. The inflections happen at different points.

Covington/Mandeville has it's own accent and it is not even close to being classic southern.

I wonder why my little town of Montevallo,AL is listed. It only has a population of about 4,000 when school isn't in session. It might have something to do with speech pathology program at the university helping him with his research.
