Started watching 'The Wire' last night... (no spoilers please)

After seeing all the amazing reviews on this show I decided to watch the first episode but it didn't really grab my attention. When can I expect it to pick up? Or should I be already entrapped after the first episode?

yeah I get that, but am I going to have to sit through several boring episodes before I finally get to the point of actually wanting to watch the next one?

Watch a couple more episodes.

If it doesn't grab you, it won't.

It isn't a crime/drama or a cop/drama.

It is a character/drama, and the star of the show is Baltimore.

jesus you're like the 100th retard to start this thread

The Wire isn't LOST or Fringe or 24 that is going to leave you with cliffhangers to make you come back, it's a slow build, character driven series that will suck you in once you get to know and understand the characters

The Wire is one of those shows that doesn't just grab you and take you on a rollercoaster ride. It's very deliberate and has a pretty enthralling underlying plot that is very well set up by the first season. So I'd say to watch at least the first season and see how you like it. It shouldn't take that long to suck you in, but if you've gotten that far and still aren't digging it, then it's not for you.

FWIW, the first season is #1 or #2 in quality IMO (the other being season four). But the entire show is ridiculous good.

Just stick with it, dude. Before long, you'll be sucked into it and you won't really even know why. Since I finally watched it last year, I've said that it's one of the best shows I've ever seen, and I can't really explain why. It's awesome because it's just awesome.

I like all of them, but 1 and 4 are my favorite.

Also, dustin, you should know that each season focuses on a different aspect of Baltimore.
quote:

Each season of The Wire focuses on a different facet of the city of Baltimore. In chronological order they are: the illegal drug trade, the seaport system, the city government and bureaucracy, the school system, and the print news media.

Some people are turned off by season two because they don't realize that it's focus is completely different from other seasons. But ultimately all the seasons (and all the plots) are intertwined with each other. That's just a heads up if you make it to season two and are like "WTF is up with these storylines?" Just keep watching.

This is spot on. I know the Wire is considered one of the best, if not the best, shows of all time. So I gave it a shot. I watched 2 seasons and gave up because I just didn't care. Not every show is for everybody. But after you watch a handful of episodes you'll get the gist of what you're in for. If you're hooked, enjoy the ride. If not, at least you tried.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but seriously, if I had just 1 dollar for every time I've read the (almost exact word for word) question in the OP..... Well I'd have at least 12 dollars since like January.

But everyone seems to ask this very same question pertaining to the Wire. Chicken should make this an FAQ at the top of the movie/tv board. It should say;

"Have you read a lot of good reviews and discussions about HBO's The Wire over the years and decided to give it a shot, only to have finished the first episode and feel like its just not grabbing you? Well how much longer should it take before you are completely hooked? Click this link to find out."

I've watched Season 1 and plan on watching Season 2 here soon. It was about the 3rd episode or so before I really started getting into it.

As a general rule of thumb whenever someone asks about a new show I always tell them to watch the full 1st season before they make a judgment on it. Some shows slow build and you're not going to get that after the 1st episode.

This.

One word I use to describe finishing all the episodes of The Wire is rewarding. I would say I started watching it as a casual interest, but once I began connecting the subplots, I was hooked. The ending being absolutely perfect for me.

Common. There are so many characters and the show is so dense that it takes a few episodes to fully appreciate what's going on.

The reason is that it is REAL.

You are watching real life, or as close as a fictional recreation can ever come to it. This is why it so moving and gripping. It is a slap in the face and a wakeup call about what the modern American city REALLY is - with no added Hollywood bull shite (except season 5).

The show was made by people who had lived it (cops, teachers, street kids, journalists etc). It is basically a documentary (and it is even shot like one - the documentary visual style is striking from even the first episode).

It is the GOAT and it aint even close. To call it a "cop show" or "crime show" is totally missing the point. It is US (the American city). To confront that reality in the mirror is very disturbing and can make one question everything one believes or "knows".
