Kid Discovers iPad Smart Cover Magnets Can Shut Off Implanted Defibrillators

quote:

A fourteen-year-old has discovered that the tiny magnets inside the iPad can inadvertently shut off implanted defibrillators if the device is left on the chest, such as might happen if the user falls asleep with the iPad lying on them.

Apple builds magnets into every iPad it sells for use with its Smart Cover accessory.

Gianna Chien made the discovery as part of a science fair project that didn't win first place, but she will be presenting her findings to 8,000 doctors at a meeting of the Heart Rhythm Society in Denver, reports Bloomberg.

I wonder if this has any effect on pacemakers too. My kid has a pacemaker, implanted into his abdomen.

We don't own an iPad (OT poor folk here) but it could potentially be a problem. Strong magnets can cause his pacemaker to malfunction, so I wonder if these would cause the same problem, considering the placement of the pacemaker and how people sit with the iPad on their lap or chest area.

I'm really just posting this to be able to find this later and do some research...but any OT pacemaker experts feel free to chime in.

First place was awarded to Yosuki Manko for his discovery of a stronger, smaller magnet that will be used to hold the drop-proof protective cover on the new and improved Apple Nano Potato Clock.

but the project was beat out for the top spot by work on electromagnetics and on the effect of punctuation mark placement in keyboards on carpal tunnel syndrome.
