When subspecies of Tigers hybridize they can still breed, but you may be correct about conservation groups not wanting to breed.
When Tigers breed with other big cats such as lions the offspring is often sterile.

Sad to say, a true story bout breeding Mike. Back in the late 60's or early 70's, LSU came up with this idea to save money. He was brought over to Jackson, Ms where the closest female tiger was available. It was all done in secrecy, so he was not transported in his cage,which was similar to the one used now. As he was pulled up next to the cage where the female tiger was, door opening directly into the cage, the female tiger went crazy with lust apparently, and Mike...froze. His handlers could never get him out of his cage. LSU kept this quiet for yrs, as it was too embarrassing to have our mighty tiger mascot scared by a female tiger...in Mississippi, where the johnny rebs were our biggest rivalry at the time. That was the last attempt at breeding Mike as far as I know.

Yea but if it's specifically to breed another Mike...
Of course, I dk what you would do with the rest of the litter, release them into the wild?

I honestly don't know enough about the different subspecies of tigers to know if it would create any problems releasing hybrid tigers into the wild.
I know the Florida Panther population decreased in such size that scientists were worried about genetic bottle necking. They brought in mountain lions from other parts of the country to aid in gene flow.
I'm not sure if various subspecies of Tigers are too specialized for their respective climates and habitats to have difficulty in the wild.
