Snippet from Chad Ford's new mock released today:
quote:

5
Trey Burke
New Orleans Pelicans (8.8)
COLLEGE: Michigan
AGE: 20
HT: 6-1
WT: 175
POS: PG

Analysis: Burke certainly will get a look as the potential No. 1 pick if the Magic draft there. The other team that seems to fit Burke are the Pelicans. Yes, Greivis Vasquez is coming off a breakout season, but Burke is a totally different player and could complement Vazquez coming off the bench early on. The Pelicans' other big need is at small forward. Shabazz Muhammad could get a look here. So could Croatia's Dario Saric. Sources say that the Pelicans are one of the two or three strongest suitors for Saric at the moment.
Thoughts?

I've watched way too much of the top 5 or 6 guys in this draft, but almost none of Saric because I never thought he'd actually go top 5.

Im still hoping for Burke at 5 or Mclemore or Porter if we get lucky in the lottery again. After that, I don't think i'd love or hate anybody they'd pick. Just hope we get lucky at that point.

I agree with their thoughts on Burke completely. Bring him in to push Vasquez and provice athleticism/speed.

As for Saric/Muhammad, I'm really down on Muhammad because of all of the red flags (attitude, age, etc).

Hopefully the front office makes the right choice and takes Burke

Saric seems like a stretch in the top 5, but what do I know

And big time no thank you to Sha-bust

Trey Burke in consideration for #1 overall? Damn...that is extremely surprising.

I don't know much about Saric as I obviously haven't seen him play.

All I know is that he's 19, 6'10" 225ish and this blurb from DraftExpress:

quote:

DraftExpress: No question Dario Saric is a prospect. His feel is off the charts. Problem is he shoots 50% from the free throw line and can't guard anyone.

Couldn't tell you anything else. I know Dell is trying to get the Euro scouting better and better, and to follow a more Spurs-esque model. Would be shocked if this guy is the pick at #5 overall.

Everything I'm reading on Saric says that he's likely a "draft and stash" player rather than an immediate contributor.

If we're taking him that high, I think it says a lot about what Monty and Dell think about this year's class of players.

If that's the case, man that would hurt.

I agree. Here's an article about the Mavs potentially taking him at 13, but they really don't want to add a rookie. If we take Saric I'd rather trade for #13 to do it. If Dallas wants more veteran players we have Vasquez and Lopez available LINK

Chad Ford posted an article last week titled "Is Dario Saric the next Magic Johnson?"

Meh. Gravy > Magic Johnson

Reading more and more about him, this is what I gather:

Definitely a "Point-Forward" SF prospect. Excellent ball-handler, excellent passer, exceptional feel for the game. Passionate, Hard worker, only 19 years old and has a lot of improvement ahead of him.

Poor shooter and a poor defender. Not laterally quick. Not a high flyer or above the rim type player.

I've seen comparisons all over the place, from Galinari to Tony Kukoc pre-NBA (he was a beast in Europe before he got fat and went NBA) to Odom (weird comparison there).

Sounds like the perfect guy to get at 15...but at 5?

That's the problem with Euro prospects. It's hard to gauge exactly how good they are unless you see them against top competition.

And, yes, I agree this is a much better pick for the end of the lottery or the start of the non-lottery picks than at #5 overall.

MAYBE I could see it if we get shat upon at the lottery and pick 8th. But not 5th.

He shot 30% from 3 and 50% from the line in the Adriatic League. He shot 29% from 3 in Croatia.

He's a poor 3 point shooter and atrocious FT shooter at this point. He is only 19.

I'm gonna be beyond furious if this guy or Shabazz end up on our team at 5. I will seriously doubt our team's ability to put a contender on the floor with the current regime. European prospects are so ridiculously over-hyped it's ridiculous. Oh look, he can dribble and pass, and he's white, so he can definitely figure out the whole shooting/defending thing even though he can't shoot or defend worth a shite at 19...

I'd rather trot Dipo out there as our undersized SF then have a lazy, selfish player like Shabazz.

This is probably either a smokescreen or more likely an exaggeration by Ford. Donatas Motiejunas was actually a top 5/10 player in mocks for part of the year and he ended up going 20th. There would have to be a lot more buzz about Saric for him to go 5th.
